COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Maryland volleyball team gave its fans and supporters their first look at the 2019 team, kicking off the season with the Red-White Scrimmage on Saturday evening.
Separated into two teams, the Terps scrimmaged in front of hundreds of fans, playing five sets. Despite the white team winning the first three sets, some players swapped squads and gave the red team wins in the last two sets.
"It was great to actually put on the jerseys and play tonight," said head coach Adam Hughes. "I think the team has had a pretty good preseason camp and they're really excited to get a little breather, start school on Monday, and probably see somebody across the net other than themselves. Overall I thought the performance was pretty good, I thought our hustle was good. I thought we ran down some plays and they played a pretty good match."
Saturday's scrimmage was the first time fans saw Maryland's newcomers in action, including freshmen Lexy Finnerty, Rebekah Rath, and Cara Lewis, as well as sophomore transfer Maddie Naumann.
The Terps will officially kick off their 2019 campaign next Saturday, August 31 at the Wolfpack Invitational, where Maryland will face off against Austin Peay and Kansas State. The first home match of the season will be September 2 vs. Howard at 6 p.m. To purchase tickets, click HERE.
