Terps Women's Golf Finishes7th At Penn State Invite

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Led by freshman Erin Clapser's (N. Potomac, Md.) 12th place individual finish, the University of Maryland women's golf team finished in seventh place at the Nittany Lion Fall Invitational as play on the Penn State White course concluded today. Clasper's individual finish and the team finish are the highest ever in the two-month history of the program.
For the second straight day, No. 19 Oregon shot below 300 to capture the team title. The Ducks, paced by medalist senior Pam Sowden, finished the 54-hole tourney with an 885. Host Penn State followed by three strokes with a 888. Louisville and Ohio tied for third at 902.
Clasper played her best golf of the fall season with a three-round average of 74.6. She finished all three of her rounds with scores in the 70's and finished within 14 strokes of par for the entire tournament. She shot a school-record low 71 on the first day of the event and followed with a 76 on day two and a 77 on day three. Clasper's scores were personal-bests and marked the first time in her collegiate career that she had shot any round in the 70's. She finished tied for sixth among the 107 golfers with six birdies during the tournament.
Freshman Jen Gibson (Havertown, Pa.) also played well as she shot a 77 in today's final round. She improved her individual placement by three spots from day two and by seven spots following her day one score.
Sophomore Brooke Bendler (Salisbury, Md.) and freshman Carter Crowther (Kilmarnick, Va.) shot personal collegiate low scores of 75 and finished with identical tournament scores of 242. The pair finished in a tie for 56th place. Freshman Holly Thornton (Delran, Pa.), who hit the first eagle in the history of the program on day two, improved her individual finish by 11 positions on day two. She shot a personal collegiate best 75 in Sunday's third round.
