Terps Look To String Two Wins Together Against Monmouth, UNC

COLLEGE PARK, MD.- - The Maryland men's soccer team (4-5, 1-2 ACC) hosts its first two games of a three-game home stint this week when they host unranked Monmouth (3-4-2) and No. 10 North Carolina (8-2, 2-1 ACC). The Terps are looking to string together two wins for the first time since the Virginia Classic over a month ago. Monmouth heads to Ludwig Field on Wednesday, and North Carolina visits the Terps' home field Saturday. Both games start at 7 p.m.
Downing On MAC Final 15
Junior Nick Downing (Redmond, Wash.) has been named as one of the finalists for the Missouri Athletic Club's Collegiate Soccer Player of the Year Award, as announced Monday by the Missouri Athletic Club. Downing, a two-year starter on defense for the Terps, was also a finalist for the award his sophomore year and is one of only three repeat candidates for the prestigious award. Duke's Ali Curtis, who finished second in the balloting last year, and Connecticut's Brent Rahim were the other two repeat candidates. Downing is one of three ACC players on the short-list for the MAC Collegiate Player of the Year.
Cirovski Six Away From 100 Wins at Maryland
Entering his eighth year at Maryland, head coach Sasho Cirovski has compiled a 94-55-14 (.620) record. A 1985 graduate of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Cirovski owns a 120-67-14 (.632) through his first nine years of head coaching. Cirovski sits just six wins away from the 100-win plateau at Maryland. He has 14 or more wins in each of his last six seasons. The Terps' 3-0 win against American on Sept. 27 marked the 200th game Cirovski has coached in his career.
The Maryland/Monmouth Series
This year marks only the second meeting between Maryland and Monmouth. The Terps won last year by a 3-0 margin in driving rain courtesy of Hurricane Floyd. The Hawks enter this Wednesday night's game with a 3-4-2 record (0-2-1 NEC), and are lead in scoring by Damon Albano with nine points (three goals, three assists). Senior Jason Sardis (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) is the only current Terp to have scored against the Hawks last season, netting the Terps' third goal of the soggy shutout win.
Salyer Explodes For Terrapins
Freshmen Philip Salyer (Dallas, Texas), who has been a key addition to the Maryland defense all season, proved last week he could be a deadly offensive weapon for the Terps as well. Salyer scored twice in Maryland's 3-0 win over American, notching Maryland's first and last goals of the day. The U-20 national team member also tied the game at three for the Terrapins on Sunday against Wake Forest. Add an assist from earlier in the season, and Salyer has become the Terps' third-leading scorer with seven points just like that.
Freshman Trio Leads Terps in Scoring
Freshmen Bryan Vitagliano (Scotsdale, Ariz.) added an assist to his season totals against Wake Forest and now leads the Terps' in scoring. He has three goals and three assists through Maryland's first nine games goals against NC State on Sept. 17, Indiana on Sept. 8, and his first career goal vs. Jacksonville at the Virginia Classic on Sept. 1. Classmate Abe Thompson (Fairfax Station, Va.) is right behind him and has three goals and two assists with his goals coming against South Florida on Sept. 3 and two more in Maryland's 5-0 defeat of NC State on Sept. 17.
Sardis on the Career Charts
Senior Jason Sardis (1997-Pres.) joined the career assists list at Maryland last year, and has kept on climbing after rejoining the team just weeks into the 2000 season. Sardis has 18 career assists through the Wake Forest game, and is tied with Jason Cropley (1996-99) at the No. 5 spot with 18. Randy Merkel (1996-98) is fourth with 19, and the No. 3 spot belongs to Shane Dougherty (1993-94) with 21. Keith Beach (1995-98) is Maryland's all-time career assists leader with 35.
Junior co-captains Nick Downing and Beckett Hollenbach sit just off the career assist list with 11 and 10, respectively.

Bitten by the Injury Bug
Sophomore Scott Buete suffered a broken foot during the 36th minute of the Indiana game on Sept. 8. Buete will miss the rest of the Terrapins' season, but will apply for a medical redshirt. Buete had three points this season on a goal against South Florida and an assist against Jacksonville, both in the Virginia Classic where he earned all-tournament team honors. He underwent surgery on Sept. 13.
Sophomore A.J. Herrera has suffered an season-ending foot injury, and will most likely redshirt the 2000 year. Herrera will join classmate Scott Buete on the sidelines this season. Herrera will most likely redshirt along with Buete.
On Friday, both Siba Mohammed and Matt Roberts (Hillsborough, N.J.) underwent operations to correct lingering knee problems from earlier surgeries. They will both be sidelined for the season with Buete and Herrera.
All total, nine out of 21 Terps have sustained injuries which have caused them to miss either entire games, crucial minutes of play, or the remainder of the season depending on the severity of their injury.
Loyola Game Moved to Oct. 25
Maryland men's soccer game vs. Loyola that was originally scheduled for 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 20 has been postponed because of sloppy field conditions due to rain. The game has been rescheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. The regional contest, which was originally to be played at Goucher College in Towson, Md., but will now be held at Ludwig Field.

88.1 FM WMUC, the student radio station for the University of Maryland, is set to broadcast at least eight of Maryland's men's soccer games this fall, including the 2000 ACC tournament at Wake Forest. All of WMUC's broadcasts can be accessed over the Internet at www.wmuc.umd.edu.
