CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Maryland field hockey (16-3, 3-1 ACC) attempts to capture its fourth consecutive conference tournament and fifth in school history on Sunday, squaring off against Wake Forest (14-3, 3-1 ACC) at 1 p.m. The top-seeded Terps cruised by fourth-seeded Virginia, 4-1, in the ACC semifinal to reach the championship game, which will air live on FOX Sports South, Sushine Network and Comcast SportsNet in the Baltimore/Washington D.C.area.

The Terrapins, currently tied for first in the NFHCA Coaches Poll, captured the ACC Championship once in 1992 before stringing together three titles in a row -- 1998, 1999 and 2000. Last season, All-America defensive back Autumn Welsh (Macungie, Pa.) took tournament MVP honors, keying host Maryland to a 3-1 semifinal victory over Wake Forest and a 3-0 championship shutout against Virginia.

Welsh joins head coach Missy Meharg and three of her teammates as one of five Terrapins to receive 2001 All-ACC honors. Seniors Dina Rizzo (Walpole, Mass.), Rachel Hiskins (Melbourne, Victoria, Australia) and Caroline Walter (Reilingen, Germany) were selected to the all-conference team, while Welsh was named Co-Player of the Year and Meharg Coach of the Year for the fourth time in her career.

The 2001 ACC Championship marks the 15th time the Terrapins have reached the final game in the 19 years of the tournament, and ninth in the past ten years. Maryland's group of eight seniors (junior Angie Klingerman (Bloomsburg, Mass.) is a fourth-year player after a redshirt freshman season) vie for an undefeated ACC Tournament record against the Deacons on Sunday.

Maryland enters the tournament final on a five-match win streak. The Terps bounced back from a 1-0 OT loss to Old Dominion to beat UNC in extra time on Oct. 21, before downing Delaware (4-1 on Oct. 24), James Madison (5-0 on Oct. 26), Drexel (6-0 on Oct. 28) and Virginia, 4-1, in the semifinal round on Friday.

The Terps and Deacs have met once before in the ACC final The result -- a double-overtime thriller and a 3-2 Maryland win as part of The Terps' 24-1 national championship season in 1999.
