Women's Tennis Puts Up Fight At William & Mary

Williamsburg, Va.-- The University of Maryland women's team had a tough quarterfinals round at the Ninth Annual William & Mary Invitational, Saturday. Battling opponents from 12 different schools, the Terrapins fell in hard-played sets, many to ranked players from Old Dominion, Arizona and Wake Forest.
In singles action, Arizona's Debbi Larocque, ranked No. 85, defeated junior Delila Causevic (Silver Spring, Md.) in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6 (8). Old Dominion's No. 87-ranked Ana Radeljevic handed sophomore Emily Marker (Ann Arbor, Mich.) the other quarterfinals loss, 6-3, 6-4. Coming off a bye round, senior Pamela Floro (Manila, Philippines) defeated W&M's Kari Olsen 6-1, 6-3. However, the Terps' last player standing, Floro, lost in the semifinals to Richmond's Jeannette Cluskey, 6-1, 6-0.
In consolation play, junior Marta Jedrzejak (Sieradz, Poland) emerged as the team workhorse, coming from behind to defeat Boston College's Emily Yeomans, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (5), 7-6 (6), in one of the most exciting matches of the tournament. In the later contest, she overpowered W&M's Kelli Partlow 6-2, 6-1 and will face Penn's Shelah Chao in the finals Sunday morning.
The doubles team of Causevic and Marker fell in the semifinals to Wake Forest's Janet Bergman and Bea Bielik, 8-1. Deamon Deacons Bergman and Bielik are ranked No. 2 in doubles nationally. With all Terps now out of contention for the title, they will take the court Sunday morning for consolation matches.
