Maryland and Virginia: Each seeking second ACC win
? The Maryland Terrapins take on the Virginia Cavaliers, their sixth conference opponent of the season, on April 10, at 2:30 p.m. at the Tennis Center at College Park. The Terps are winless in their last five contests, dropping four straight to ACC foes: Clemson, Georgia Tech, Duke and North Carolina. Maryland sports a 9-8 overall record and is 1-4 in ACC play.
? Virginia, ranked 56th nationally, has also traveled a tough road to get to this point in the season. The Cavaliers are 10-7 and 1-4 in ACC play. Like Maryland, UVA has dropped four straight to ACC teams. Both teams' sole conference win came against Florida State, by the same score of 4-3.
? UVA relies on its veteran players, senior Amy O'Donnell and juniors Henriette Williams and Jennifer Tunchband to lead the way. Williams heads the lineup at the No. 1 position, followed by Tunchband and O'Donnell at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. Williams recorded an impressive win this past weekend, defeating Duke's No. 3 ranked Kelly McCain, in three sets, 7-6 (3), 1-6, 7-6 (6).
? In doubles, Williams and Tunchband play the top spot, followed by senior Christine Kim O'Donnell at No. 2. O'Donnell is featured as UVA's May student-athlete of the month. The Cavaliers are coached by Phil Rogers, who enters his 19th season as the UVA women's tennis head coach.
Terps in Review
? Maryland has played a tough ACC schedule in April, including last weekend's contests against No. 4 ranked Duke and No.8 ranked North Carolina. Terps lost to both teams by an identical score of 6-1. Against Duke, the highlight of the day for the Terps was junior Marta Jedrzejak's (Sieradz, Poland) win at the No. 4 singles position. Jedrzejak held on to defeat Blue Devil Ioana Plesu, 6-2, 1-6, 7-6. Jedrzejak's win secured Maryland its only point of the day.
? Against UNC, Maryland's doubles teams went to work capturing a point for winning two out of the three doubles matches. At No.1 doubles, the tandem of junior, two-time All-ACC, Delila Causevic (Sarajevo, Bosnia) and team captain Emily Marker (Ann Arbor, Mich.) defeated Tar Heels Marlene Mejia and Julie Rotondi, 9-7. Terps' No. 2 doubles team of Jedrzejak (Sieradz, Poland) and freshman Emily DeCamilla (Sacramento, Calif.) won by the same score, edging the No. 36 ranked team of Kendall Cline and Aniela Mojzis.
Up Next for Maryland:
? Terps take to the road this weekend to finish off regular season play. Maryland will travel to Winston-Salem, N.C. to play Wake Forest on April 13 and to Raleigh, N.C. the next day to face N.C. State. The ACC Championships begin on April 18 and will be held in Raleigh, N.C.
