Maryland's Next Game: Sunday, Sept. 15:
No. 10 Terps vs. NC State~ 1 p.m.
Raleigh, N.C.
The No. 10 Terrapin men's soccer team meets No. 8 Loyola in a pivotal game with regional implications on Wednesday at 7 p.m. on Ludwig Field. Maryland enters the game at 3-1, while Loyola brings a perfect 3-0 record to meet the Terps.
The storyline for this one is a good one, too, with Loyola the team responsible for knocking UM from the NCAA tournament in the second round last year 1-0 in double overtime. That game, held at Ludwig Field, gave the Greyhounds their first win in College Park since 1992 when UM dropped a 2-0 loss to Loyola.
September 11th, 2001, Remembered at Terps' Game
The Terps and Greyhounds will pause for a moment of silence before their game on Sept. 11 to remember the terrorist attacks of a year ago and honor the victims' memory as well as their family and friends. The Maryland/Loyola game, the first game back for both teams after the attacks last year, was played on Sept. 19.
All-Time Series vs. Loyola
Maryland dominates the series against Loyola, holding a 21-8-6 record in a series that dates back to 1947 when the two teams played to a 4-4 tie in the last game of the Terps' season that year.
The Terrapins have lost the last two games to the Greyhounds, both on Ludwig Field last season, both by a 1-0 margin. Maryland was knocked out of the 2001 NCAA tournament's second round by Loyola on a goal in the second overtime frame by the Greyhounds' Juliano Adriano deOliveria. Previously, the Terps had not lost to Loyola since 1992 when they dropped a 2-0 decision to the Greyhounds on Nov. 1. The last three Loyola wins have been shutouts.
Maryland's last win over Loyola was a 1-0 victory at Ludwig Field. The last 11 games between the two teams have been shutouts.
All-Time Series vs. NC State
The Terps' series with NC State dates back to 1950 when Maryland lost the inaugural Southern Conference match-up 3-0 in Raleigh. Maryland holds the advantage in the all-time series, 36-19-4.
Maryland is on a five-game win-streak against the Wolfpack and defeated NCSU 3-0 last year at Ludwig Field. The last Maryland defeat came in 1997 when the Wolfpack downed the Terps 1-0 at Ludwig Field. The last time NC State beat Maryland in Raleigh was on Sept. 18, 1994. That decision was a 4-3 win for the Pack.
The last six meetings in the ACC series have been shutouts.
UM vs. Ranked Opponents
The No. 10 Terps' meeting with No. 8 Loyola will only mark the second time this season Maryland has met an opponent ranked in the NSCAA Top 25. The first time then-No. 20 Kentucky upset the Terps 2-1 at the Virginia Soccer Classic when Maryland was ranked No. 10.
Terps in the South Atlantic Region
Maryland is currently second in its region, the South Atlantic region, with a 3-1 record. Loyola (3-0) is the No. 1 team in the region, with the Virginia Cavaliers (3-1) third after losing to unranked Penn State 4-2 at the Maryalnd/FILA Classic.
Terps Back in Top 10
The University of Maryland men's soccer team is back in the national rankings this week at No. 10 in the Sept. 9 poll released by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). Seven of the Terps' opponents this season are ranked in the current poll, including Maryland's opponent this week, No. 8 Loyola (Md.).
Maryland was also ranked 10th in the NSCAA preseason poll, but fell out of the rankings after a one-goal loss to then-No. 20 Kentucky at the Virginia Soccer Classic during week one of the season. This past weekend, the Terps raised their record to 3-1 after defeating Penn State 2-1 and Virginia Commonwealth 4-1 to win the Maryland/FILA Classic.
Cirovski Celebrates 10th Anniversary
The 2002 season marks the 10th year that head coach Sasho Cirovski has guided the Terrapin men's soccer program. The Terps' bench boss has piloted the program to a 114-71-9 record during his 10 years in College Park. Cirovski, a 1986 graduate of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, is entering his 12th year overall and has a 142-83-15 career record.
Under Cirovski, the Terrapins have over 100 wins, a 1998 appearance in the national semifinals, and eight NCAA appearances. Maryland won the 1996 ACC Championship and has had numerous Terrapins sign professional contracts in the United States and abroad.
Super Sumed
The Terps' leading scorer last season, Sumed Ibrahim, started the 2002 season with a bang at the Virginia Soccer Classic. A 2001 first team All-ACC pick, Sumed scored seven points in the first half of the Rhode Island game off two goals and three assists, a single-game record at the Virginia Soccer Classic. His performance helped lift the Terps to a 8-0 victory and grabbed Sumed all-tournament honors.
The dynamite midfielder picked-up more hardware last weekend at the Maryland/FILA Classic when he earned Offensive MVP and all tournament team honors. In the Terrapins' 2-1 victory over the Nittany Lions, Sumed scored the game-winning goal in the 36th minute of play. Against Virginia Commonwealth, his assist came on the Terps' first goal of the day to set the offensive pace in the second half. The 2-0 weekend earned the Terps the tourney title for the first time in their Maryland/FILA Classic's three-year history.
His Maryland/FILA Classic performance also earned him ACC Player of the Week honors.
For the season, he has 10 points to lead the team after four games. His four assists are also tops for Maryland in that category. Last season, Sumed was Maryland's top scorer with 31 points on nine goals and 13 assists.
Stammler Gets Honors
The Defensive MVP of the Maryland/FILA Classic, Seth Stammler was named to the College Soccer News Team of the Week this week for his efforts. Stammler and the Terps captured a 2-1 win over Penn State as well as a 4-1 victory over Virginia Commonwealth to clinch the 2002 Maryland/FILA Classic.
In addition to pacing a defense that gave up two goals on the weekend, Stammler added two assists to the offensive efforts of the tournament champion Terps. His assist in game one of the tournament vs. Penn State was on Sumed Ibrahim's game-winning goal in the 36th minute. Stammler's second assist of the weekend led to the Terps' first goal of the day against Virginia Commonwealth. He is second on the Terps' season assists list with three helpers in Maryland's first four games.
All-Tournament Accolades
Four Terrapins have picked up all-tournament accolades in the opening two weekends on the 2002 season. Sumed Ibrahim and Seth Stammler picked up offensive and defensive MVP honors, respectfully, at the Maryland/FILA Classic this past weekend. Both were also named all-tournament at both the Virginia Soccer Classic and the Maryland/FILA Classic.
Abe Thompson and Noah Palmer also earned all-tournament honors at the Maryland/FILA Classic over the weekend.
