EVANSTON, Ill. – Redshirt senior Billy Rappo (133), redshirt sophomore Alfred Bannister (149) and redshirt freshman Josh Ugalde (165) all advanced to day two of the 54th Ken Kraft Midlands Championships on Thursday. The trio of Terps will wrestle back in the consolation ladder starting Friday morning at noon (1 pm ET). Rappo will face Earl Hall (Iowa State), Bannister has Steve Bleise (NIU) and Ugalde will wrestle Alex Marinelli (Iowa) in consolation round six tomorrow.
Rappo put together two quality wins in his season debut at 133 pounds, taking out a pair of seeded Rutgers wrestlers to advance to the quarterfinals. Rappo's opening bout was one of the most exciting of the day in front of a large crowd at Welsh-Ryan Arena, coming back to defeat sixth-seeded Tyson Dippery (Rutgers). After going down 4-2, Rappo scrambled from the top position in the second period to put Dippery in a cradle and eventually on his back for an upset pin (4:17).
The Holland, Pa. native then went to work on 11th-seeded Scott Delvecchio, clinching an 8-3 decision. Rappo had some early offense against sixth-ranked Seth Gross (SDSU) in his quarterfinal match, but a counter on a shot from Gross at the end of the first period turned into six points for the Jack Rabbit grappler. Rappo scrambled until the end, but couldn't make up the difference on the No. 3 seed as he went down 8-3.
Bannister was on point in his two early matches, securing bonus point wins over Jordan Shearer (Nebraska) and Kahlan Lee-Lermer (Chicago). The La Plata, Md. native then put on the theatrics in his next three bouts of the day; which all went to overtime. Bannister surrendered his first loss of the season in a close bout with Anthony Giraldo (Rutgers), going down 2-1 in tiebreaker in his quarterfinal match. .
Bannister and Jordan Laster (Princeton) wrestled a marathon in their third meeting of the season, going the distance and through two sets of overtime periods in the consolation bracket. After the duo traded escapes in regulation, Bannister managed to hold Laster in the first ride out, but was hit with a stall call after escaping to tie the match at two. A locked hands call turned into a point for Laster, but an escape and ride time criteria ultimately gave Bannister a third victory in the series between the two 149-pounders.
Baby J then put together another overtime win in his final match of day one vs. Alex Kocer (South Dakota State), escaping in the first tiebreaker period before holding him for a 3-2 win.
Ugalde rattled off three wins on the mat Thursday to punch his ticket to day two, which included a set of wins in the championship division to start the morning. Ugalde picked up an 18-1 tech, then a 6-2 decision to make it into the round of 16. It was there he ran into second-seeded Chad Walsh, and was with him down to the wire until eventually surrendering a 6-4 decision.
The Bound Brook, N.J native advanced on a medical forfeit in the fourth consolation round, then relied on his turn down the stretch to clinch an 8-0 major over 10th-seeded Grant Henderson (Grand View). Up 2-0, Ugalde secured six near fall points in the third period for his second bonus point win of the day.
The Terps sit in 16th overall in the team standings after day one, with 30.5 total points through sessions I and II. Five different Maryland grapplers picked up pins, which included Patrick Gerish (165), Danny Boychuck (157) and David-Brian Whisler in addition to Rappo and Bannister.
