EAST LANSING, Mich. – Senior outfielder Anthony Papio notched three hits, but the Maryland baseball team fell, 4-3, in 13 innings to Michigan State Friday afternoon at McLane Stadium.
The Terrapins (27-25, 12-11 Big Ten) held a 2-1 lead into the seventh when the Spartans took the lead. Maryland tied the contest in the eighth, but were unable to score again as the home team won on a walk-off sac fly in the 13th.
After Maryland stranded runners on second in the opening two innings, Michigan State opened the scoring in the bottom half of the inning after two errors from Andrew Bechtold allowed Dan Chmielewski to score.
Maryland tied the game in the ensuing half inning. Papio tattooed a 2-2 pitch off the wall in right field and came into score when freshman Nick Dunn produced a single into right field.
The Terrapins took the lead in the fifth. Bechtold started the inning with a single before moving to second on a Zach Jancarski sac bunt. Papio then continued his hot hitting with a single that drove in Bechtold. Maryland ended up loading the bases in the inning, but Madison Nickens popped up to end the frame.
Maryland starter Taylor Bloom cruised through the first six frames before running into trouble in the seventh. A couple of RBI singles for the Spartans gave the home team the lead before Mike Rescigno relieved Bloom and struck out Dan Durkin to end the threat.
A triple off the bat of Nickens opened the eighth before Kevin Biondic grounded out to short to bring home the run. Nick Cieri walked before being pinch run for by Kengo Kawahara. The sophomore moved to second, but Jancarski grounded out to end the inning.
Maryland put two on in the ninth, but were unable to bring a run around. Michigan State then put the winning run on third in the 11th and 12th before winning the game in the 13th frame on a Matt Byars sac fly.
Maryland sophomore Ryan Selmer was fantastic over three and two third of an inning. Freshman Hunter Parsons worked two innings, but ultimately earned the loss.
Nickens extended his hitting streak to eight games with his triple while Bechtold has now reached base in 11 straight contests.
Maryland returns to action Saturday in its final regular season game at 1 p.m. The game can be heard live on the Maryland Baseball Network.
