A Lasting Legacy: Maryland Coaches And Student-Athletes Share Impact And Favorite Quotes Of MLK

MLK Day 2023: A Lasting Legacy

As we remember Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. today, Maryland coaches and student-athletes reflect on his legacy and words and give their insight and inspiration from some of Dr. King's most memorable actions and quotes.

My favorite MLK quote is 'Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that.' Through all the inequality and discrimination Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was facing, he continued to embrace positive light when trying to enforce change for the minority.

MLK has made a lasting impact on my life as an African-American man as he, and his peers stood up for something that was bigger than themselves as their actions allowed people like me to access opportunities that were not available prior to. He was we able to make a lasting impact on our word by spreading his messages through love and peace, instead of violence and hatred.

This quote by MLK resonates with me the most because no matter how old we grow, we should never forget who we are. We should always uphold ourselves to a high standard and continue to respect and love ourselves. Once we can do that consistently, then the love can spread to others which will make the world better collectively.

My favorite MLK quote is, 'We may have all come on different ships, but we're all on the same boat now.' This quote is important to me because it represents how it doesn't matter how we got to where we are now, but now that we are here together and uniting in this one nation, we need to treat one another with respect and not hate each other for the backgrounds that we have come from. Although we may look at and live our lives differently, we are all now living in the same nation together and are responsible for making it a better and safer community to live in."

Martin Luther King, Jr., taught me the importance of hard work and understanding that nothing in life will come easy. He taught me the meaning of standing tall on my beliefs and never giving up. I understand that everyone’s path is different and it is because of him that I am clear in what it means to be patient and stay focused. He also taught me that hate is wasted energy and it’s easier to function in peace.

Growing up, our community would always honor Martin Luther King Jr., but I didn’t truly understand the great impacts he has had on me and our world. As I became more knowledgeable of his work, I realized how great an influence he truly made. With all the turmoil in the world, he held true to himself, was strong with his word and stood for something that was bigger than himself. Those resonate with me because he was truly a man for the people and wanted the best for everyone. Through his prolific speeches, sermons, or writings, he created opportunities for so many that weren’t there at the time. He is someone that cared so deeply for a peaceful world with equal opportunity and the influences he had are insurmountable. For all those reasons and more, he deserves continuous respect and praise from all of us.

'Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that,' is my favorite MLK quote because it’s all about your mindset of getting out of the darkness. You may be in the dark, but you have to be positive to get to the light.

I like his quote that says, 'It may well be that we will have to repent in this generation, not merely for the vitriolic words and the violent actions of the bad people who would bomb a church in Birmingham, Alabama but for the appalling silence and indifference of the good people who sit around and say wait on time.'

Martin Luther King is one of the greatest individuals to ever live. The movement that he lead and the legacy he leaves will continue to impact future generations for millennia. I hope every day that our staff can lead the way he did and that we could have a fraction of the impact on our kids that he did on the world.

Growing up African American, MLK has made an impact on me which was driven to help make the world a better place. Seeing the drive MLK to had to change in the world, drives me to be a better person myself and realize that majority of the actions I take are bigger than myself. MLK once said, “We may have all come on different ships, but we're in the same boat now.” This stuck with me with the realization that no matter where we all came from, we are all equal no matter the skin color we are. MLK taught us to coming together and fighting for things that are bigger than ourselves and can impact the people that came after us. He left the world better than he found it, and that’s what we have to do now.

'A true leader is not a searcher for consensus, but a molder of consensus.'

I think this quote definitely encompasses what it means to be a leader. You don’t search for the answers but work together with people to allow the answers to appear themselves.

MLK Day Quote
This is one of my favorites by Dr. Martin Luther King because there’s a lot of times in life you have to trust the process. Whether you agree with it or not, it’s one of the main keys to success. This quote reminds me that I’m not always going to see fast results and you really have to take one day, one practice, one game, and one possession at a time.

This is also my favorite quote because I always walk with faith. Even you don’t see the whole journey or path on your own, if you have faith, it’ll all work out.”

MLK Day Quote
"It may sound a bit classic, but I find this quote very inspiring and engaging. MLK was a visionary and charismatic man; he believed in his dreams, fought for them with no violence and courage, and ultimately gave his life for them. The speech he gave in Washington, D.C., on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial is one the most beautiful speeches I have ever heard."

Growing up in Atlanta, it is clear the impact Dr. King’s legacy has had on our community. As you drive through the city, you cannot help but notice the streets that were named after him, the King Center, and the National Historic Park. His efforts to advocate for peace, bring equality to America, and ensure civil rights, taught me that all people should be treated the same!
