The Barry and Mary Gossett Fellows Program

2024-25 Gossett Fellows

The University of Maryland Intercollegiate Athletic Department announced the class of 2024 and 2025 in the Barry and Mary Gossett Fellows Program. The program includes rising senior and junior student-athletes and will focus on developing them for their postgraduate career.

"As an athletic department, we are committed to creating an elite student-athlete experience at every level athletically and academically," said Damon Evans, Barry P. Gossett Director of Athletics. "The Gossett Fellows program offers our student-athletes a groundbreaking way to pursue their goals and aspirations so they can achieve success in their future careers. This groundbreaking approach to student-athlete development helps us recruit and retain the best student-athletes who will become leaders beyond their athletic careers."

Student athletes will participate in the following curriculum topics: leadership development, equity and social justice, professional development, service learning and career management. The program will also allow student-athletes to get practical experience in their respective career industries  through an internship and a professional development trip.

After the first three years of the program, 100 percent of Gossett Fellows have been placed in post-graduate academic programs, full-time jobs or internships of their choice.

Twenty-two student-athletes, who are part of the Class of 2025, make up the new Gossett Fellows for this year.

“The Gossett Fellowship Program has been crucial for me because I am not a very outgoing person. This program has helped me network and interact with people who have been in my position and it has also helped me step outside of my comfort zone when it comes to communicating and discussing my future,” said men's basketball student-athlete Jahari Long. “The Gossett Fellowship Program has helped me set a foundation for what I want to do once I stop playing basketball and start looking for the next step in my life.”

Krista Varrichione is one of the nine returning student-athletes from the class of 2024, who had a valuable experience in their first year as a Gossett Fellow.

"Being in the Gossett Fellowship Program has helped me network with other students along with professionals who have experience in the field that I can learn and grow from to help pave the path for my future career. This program has helped me learn important skills to prepare for joining the work force after college. I have learned interviewing tips, networking tips, financial literacy, and even met many mentors on the way I can turn to who guide me and care about my future."

Following completion of the program, graduates will receive an honorarium to use towards their postgraduate career plans. Student athletes that graduate from the program will become members of the Terps Career Network, Maryland's student-athlete alumni network which will provide continued access to mentorships that will allow student athletes to continue their growth outside of Maryland.
