One Maryland Collective, the official NIL collective that serves student-athletes at the University of Maryland, recently partnered with Preakness Stakes, a historic American horse race.

The pairing is the first of its kind, providing a unique opportunity for the growth of the collective that supports the University of Maryland’s student-athletes. The partnership also provides the university and its student body discounted tickets to attend Preakness Live 2024, a full day of live music and entertainment accompanying the 149th rendition of the historic race held on May 18 at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore.

“This is a really unique partnership,” Chris Weiner, the Executive Director of the One Maryland Collective, said. “That's why it's so exciting and great to see. You have two drastically different organizations in the sports world working hand-in-hand.”

University of Maryland students can purchase discounted tickets to Preakness Live by using the code “goterps” at checkout. The code unlocks a 15% discount, and all tickets include admission to views of the Preakness Live stage and all racing events throughout the day.

The live music festival features performances from Jack Harlow, Channel Tres, Chantel Jeffries, Frank Walker, and Gryffin. A percentage of the sales will also support the One Maryland Collective and the university’s student-athletes.

“For the collective, this partnership is important because it's helping bring us a lot of visibility,” Weiner said. We're still a growing brand, and aligning ourselves with Preakness, which has been deeply ingrained in the fabric of the Maryland community for a very long time, is an exciting opportunity.”

The Preakness is the second leg of the Triple Crown and is held annually. It boasts a rich history not only in the state of Maryland but also in the sport of horse racing. The race is regarded as Baltimore’s finest entertainment and hospitality experience and ranks second in attendance in the U.S. among equestrian events.

The Preakness was established in the Pimlico neighborhood of Baltimore in 1873. It was named after the horse that won the Dinner Party Stakes at the track in its opening year in 1870. Since then, the race has become one of the most important in American thoroughbred racing.

“There's a lot of history there. If you follow horse racing, you understand the importance of it and the excitement around this event,” Weiner said. “If you're new to racing, or you've never been to an event, this is a really great way to get exposure to it.”

The One Maryland Collective is also holding an online auction for two pairs of VIP tickets in the Turfside Terrace. Fans can join the collective and head football coach Michael Locksley trackside for the races.

Attendees will access an exclusive, tented VIP area with gourmet food offerings, unlimited beer and spirits, and premier race views. They can also access the Black-Eyed Susan and Preakness souvenir programs and the infield area to view Preakness Live. Most importantly, Maryland football fans will have the opportunity to meet and catch up with Locksley.

The decorated history of the Preakness and the growing nature of the One Maryland Collective sets the standard for a harmonious relationship. Weiner says the partnership is a big step for the collective and the support it provides for University of Maryland student-athletes.

“This is more than just a partnership,” Weiner said. “It's a testament to our commitment to community empowerment and celebrating Maryland's rich cultural heritage. By joining forces, we have a unique opportunity to amplify our impact, harnessing the energy and excitement of the Preakness to enhance our growth efforts at One Maryland Collective. Together, we will create lasting legacies of opportunity and inclusivity by celebrating the spirit and tradition of our great state."
