A New Era of Gossett Fellows

2024-25 Gossett Fellows

The University of Maryland Intercollegiate Athletic Department announced the 2026 Barry and Mary Gossett Fellows Program class. The program includes rising sophomores, juniors and senior student-athletes and will focus on developing them for their postgraduate career.

Maryland Athletics is committed to creating the consummate student-athlete experience at every level academically, academically and in the community, said Damon Evans, the Barry P. Gossett Director of Athletics. The Gossett Fellows program offers our student-athletes an innovative way to pursue their goals and aspirations so they can achieve success in their future careers. This approach to student-athlete development helps us recruit and retain the best student-athletes who will become leaders beyond their athletic careers.

The Gossett Fellows Program focuses on developing student-athletes beyond their sports. Student-athletes will learn and utilize project management skills regardless of their career paths to ensure they can present relevant career information and practice bringing their thoughts to life.

Twenty-one student-athletes in the Class of 2026 make up this academic year's new Gossett Fellows cohort.

Junior lacrosse student-athlete Eliot Dubick shared his reason for joining the Gossett Fellows program. He’s studying marketing and recently interned at American University's marketing department.

“The motivating factors that led to me joining Gossett Fellows was the opportunity to develop my skills for the future, such as leadership development, career development and the opportunity to learn more about life after college,” Dubick said. “Also, any activity through Maryland Made is a chance to meet new friends and create connections after college.”

Redshirt senior women’s basketball student-athlete Allie Kubek detailed what she hopes to gain from the Gossett Fellows program this year. She’s a sociology major.

“I’m excited to be a part of the Gossett Fellows Program and hope to gain employment connections and opportunities, hands-on work experience with other student-athletes, and build my confidence overall.”

Junior track and field student-athlete Reece Temoney explained how Maryland Made programming has continued to set him up for success in his future career aspirations. He’s a communication major and recently interned with Maryland Athletics’ creative video department.

“It confirmed the idea of not settling,” Temoney said. “Finding the path that you want, not settling the one size fits all.”

The Gossett Fellows Program is one aspect of the innovative support model implemented by the Barry and Mary Gossett Center for Academic and Personal Excellence. The center focuses on a critical gap in student-athlete development: career transition and professional success post-graduation. It was established in April 2018 after a $21.25 million gift from the Gossett family.

2024-25 Gossett Fellows

This year, the Gossett Fellows Program welcomes a new curriculum to aid and advance the fellows' career readiness and development. Moving forward, the Gossett Fellows program will be structured as such:

Year One:
Students will meet once a month for the 2024-25 academic year to delve deeper into their respective career interests. Programming sessions will follow the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) competencies to ensure students have the proper guidelines to promote and encourage future success.

For their first year of programming, topics include:

September - Career Mapping x Visual Arts
October - Public Speaking
November - The Power of Habits
February - People and Culture Development
March - Financial Literacy
April - Capstone Presentation Preparation

Year Two:
This will be the student-athlete’s capstone year, and they will be in their respective groups preparing to present their capstone project in the Fall of 2025. Students in the capstone portion of the program do not have to attend monthly sessions. However, they’re welcome to attend if they desire. Once the students present their projects in the fall, they will bring their capstone to life by implementing the topic they presented in the fall.
