Maddie Komoroski: A Heart For Giving

The holiday season is one of giving. For one of Maryland’s most kindhearted student-athletes, December marks the end of an entire year of giving back to the community and those who need some joy.

Maryland gymnast Maddie Komoroski was one of Maryland’s 2025-26 Big Ten Jackie Robinson Community & Impact Award winners. The award was announced in November, highlighting the incredible work Komoroski’s done over the past year.

“I wasn't really expecting it, and then it came out and I was just very grateful,” Komoroski said. “I just totally wasn't expecting it and then it came out, and I was very surprised and very grateful.”

Komoroski’s service has been highlighted by her time in the Gossett Fellows Program and the Kubasik First Impact Program.

“It means a lot to know that the extra time that I'm putting in and the effort that I'm putting in is paying off in the community and hopefully making a difference,” Komoroski said. “It feels good to be able to know that the time and effort that I'm putting into is paying off and benefitting others.”

She’s served with several Maryland Made functions and events this year, including her favorite event, Maryland’s Adopt-A-Family and Pie-A-Terp night

“I personally really liked the wrapping party,” Komoroski said. “It gets you in the Christmas spirit, and makes you feel like you're helping out. You donated to a good cause, and you donated your time to help wrap these gifts, to give kids a good Christmas. I think it's fun. It's not only just a community service activity, but it's a fun activity to meet new people and to intermingle with the athletes again and take another opportunity that's provided to you.”

“I was provided with all of these opportunities, and I wanted to take every opportunity that I could. I also think it's very important. I'm very grateful to be in the position that I'm in and to be given all these resources. I know that there are other people who don't have these resources, and I think it's very important for me to take advantage of all the things that I can take advantage of and give back to people that don't have the same opportunities as me, because I know that I'm very lucky.

On the mat, she serves as the anchor on balance beam, a role demanding both composure and courage, and is recognized as the team's standard of positivity, passion, and hard work. Her persistence was especially evident following shoulder surgery, where her determination and resilience allowed her to return to full competition form without missing a season.

“I was provided with all of these opportunities, and I wanted to take every opportunity that I could,” Komoroski said. “I also think it's very important. I'm very grateful to be in the position that I'm in and to be given all these resources. I know that there are other people who don't have these resources, and I think it's very important for me to take advantage of all the things that I can take advantage of and give back to people that don't have the same opportunities as me, because I know that I'm very lucky.”

I just want people to know that I try. I put my best foot forward, and I try my hardest in everything that I do. My number one goal is to keep myself happy, but make other people happy and make other people feel the impact that I’m able to give.

Last season, she championed the gymnastics program's annual LGBTQ+ Pride meet, advocating for inclusivity and justice for underrepresented communities.

“One of our coaches is part of the LGBTQ community, and he is just the brightest light,” Komoroski said. “He's awesome, and we all love him, and we really want to show that we support him and his family and everything like that. I have some friends that are part of the LGBTQ community, so it just means a lot that I'm able to support them and show how much they mean to us.”

She has a passion for competition and a heart for everyone. She embodied every part of a 2025-26 Big Ten Jackie Robinson Community & Impact Award winner and is a reminder of giving back during this holiday season.

“I just want people to know that I try,” Komoroski said. “I put my best foot forward, and I try my hardest in everything that I do. My number one goal is to keep myself happy, but make other people happy and make other people feel the impact that I’m able to give.”
