Positive Impact Through Reading

Nine University of Maryland student-athletes participated in the Big Ten Conference’s Big Impact Reading Week initiative at University Park Elementary School on Feb. 24.

The Big Impact Reading Week initiative empowers student-athletes by encouraging them to make a positive impact by reading books to youth. Through this initiative, the Big Ten uses reading to positively impact the community, championing the importance of education, empathy, and inclusivity by creating a sense of community beyond the playing field.

The student-athletes who volunteered to read to the elementary students included Katie Altieri (track and field), Nyla Cherry (track and field), Lila Covey (cheerleading), Dillan Fontus (football), Rubie Goffena (track and field), Ethan Gough (football), Daphne Harmon (cheerleading), Champ Long (football) and Haley Melby (volleyball).

Together, the student-athletes read books on empathy and compassion. They read “The Gratitude Jar” and “The Lion Inside,” and they also read “I Am Jackie Robinson” to celebrate Black History Month. The student-athletes then answered questions about their student-athlete experience.

Maryland will also read to Tulip Grove Elementary School students in Bowie on March 11.

The nine student-athletes shared their experiences and what it means to impact the youth positively.

It's been awesome getting to come back here and really see the elementary school kids. I missed that when I was younger. We never had this opportunity to get football players and other sports to come and read to us, so I think that being able to give back to these kids is an awesome opportunity. Hopefully, they take the lessons that they're getting from the Jackie Robinson book and run with it.

Rubie Goffena

"It's been really rewarding to come to a local school and just talk to the kids about this book that we're reading. It's about bravery and breaking barriers, so the kids are just really excited to see us, and we love answering their questions and reading to them. It's so nice to be around them. We haven't been around kids in a little bit, so it's refreshing to see the young minds of this world."

Lila Covey
Cheerleading

Everybody's just so happy that we're here and I just love the energy that they've been giving us.

Dillan Fontus
Football

It's definitely been energy from these kids and I've really been enjoying teaching them about something. A lot of these kids I asked them who Jackie Robinson was and they looked at me like I was crazy, so it's really inspiring and motivational to teach them something new and get them engaged.

Champ Long
Football

It's a fun experience. We were just those kids a couple of years ago being read to by other people, so to be on the other side and give our time back to the younger generation is definitely a blessing.

It's been great getting to read to the kids and teach them the importance of reading and keeping their grades up so that they're able to do the sports they love too.

Haley Melby
Volleyball

I think it's important and fun to give back to the community. Now the kids who watch our games and support us get to see our faces and meet us up close.

I was just talking to my partner about how when we were their age we didn't even know what black and white was, so I think it's good for kids to see how far we've come and doing our part and educating the youth on where we're trying to go.
