Through Maryland Made’s Kubasik First Impact Program, second-year student-athletes can plan and prepare for their futures through unique experiences and skill-building opportunities.
One unique experience student-athletes are exposed to in the program is participating in internship workshop sessions. Dubbed the Preparing for Internships Workshop Series, these sessions instruct student-athletes on two major career readiness topics: building strong resumes and enhancing interviewing skills.
“These programs are essential components for students enrolled in the Kubasik First Impact Program,” said Sydney Anderson, Coordinator of Student-Athlete Development. They are designed to seamlessly guide them through the action phase of their journey.”
“After spending their first semester focused on self-discovery — understanding who they are and how their personal values, skills and interests are connected to their future career aspirations — students are now poised to take tangible steps toward their professional growth. This programming provides the tools, guidance and experiences necessary for students to move forward, translating their insights into concrete actions to help them shape their career paths and achieve their goals.”

The foremost program of the Preparing for Internships Workshop Series — Resume-Building Workshop — empowers student-athletes with the expertise to craft impactful resumes for internship applications. The workshop emphasizes integrating transferable skills to showcase their diverse capabilities and suitability for professional roles.
It covers topics such as what a resume is, comparing and contrasting a resume and curriculum vitae (CV), key components of a resume, different resume formats and resume writing tips to help you get hired. Students also had an opportunity to create a resume based on an actual job description and present it to the rest of the group, where they also worked on their public speaking.
The latter program of the Preparing for Internships Workshop Series — The Interview Playbook — seeks to prepare student-athletes for successful internship interviews by enhancing their ability to effectively discuss their experiences, articulate their strengths and adhere to best practices in communication and behavior. Lydia Woods, the Industry Development Specialist at the University of Maryland’s Career Center, led the session.

At the conclusion of the program, students demonstrated effective techniques for articulating their experiences and strengths during internship interviews. They differentiated between appropriate and ineffective communication strategies when discussing personal achievements and career goals.
They also identified and applied best practices for interview etiquette, including professional demeanor, attire and verbal and non-verbal communication. They even critiqued and improved their interview responses through peer feedback and practice scenarios. Finally, student-athletes integrated feedback and lessons learned into their interview preparation process, increasing their confidence and readiness for internship opportunities.
