The InTERPship Academy will celebrate its 10-year anniversary of supporting University of Maryland student-athletes in their career readiness journey by welcoming 37 student-athletes into the summer 2025 cohort.

The academy was created to aid student-athletes in obtaining work experience in their desired industries. Students will work from June 2 to July 25 for 15-20 hours per week at their respective organizations. They will also participate in four professional development sessions and cultivate four journal reflections before concluding with a final capstone project presentation. The development sessions include leadership development, work vs lifestyle, Next Steps in Your Career, and resume-building workshops.

InTERPship Academy alums have gained professional experience and redefined their unique skill sets as they figured out what life after college looked like for them. The Maryland Made team is dedicated to ensuring that student-athletes are thinking about their career readiness journey before they depart from the University of Maryland.

"I feel fortunate to be able to assist our students as they navigate this important next chapter of their lives,” Daeze Alaeze, Program Director of Student-Athlete Career Development, said. “The continuous growth of this program is a direct result of the athletics department’s support, our community partners and the commitment of our student-athletes to personal development and their exemplary representation of the University."

The InTERPship Academy not only places students in a position to gain relevant work experience to bolster their resumes but also allows them to gain insight into the industry they believe they want to be a part of one day. This opportunity will enable students to evaluate an industry before graduation, which then assists them in learning the skill sets needed to perform at a high level.

“InTERPship Academy has given me the opportunity to get hands-on experience in the engineering industry and allowed me to dive deeper into the technical and personal skills in the workplace,” said Carly Peterson, a junior women’s lacrosse goalie who’s interning with Instron and studying bioengineering.

This summer, the InTERPship Academy has representation from 15 varsity sports. The sports include men’s and women’s track and field, men’s and women's golf, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s lacrosse, cross country, field hockey, gymnastics, softball, tennis, volleyball, and wrestling.

Tamari Gagoshidze, a junior on Maryland's tennis team, is interning as a tax associate. She has already secured an internship with  Ernst & Young next year. She explained what she hopes to gain from her summer internship to help prepare for that opportunity.

“Since I have an internship next year in EY, I wanted to make sure that I felt prepared to enter that internship,” she said. ”The InTERPship will provide me with the proper opportunity to learn about the workplace culture in this industry. I didn't want to jump into an internship with EY without any experience, so I'm thankful for this opportunity. My supervisor for this summer also worked at EY at the same location as my internship next year, and it has made me feel so comfortable.”

What excites me the most about my summer internship with WesBanco is the fact that I’ll be able to gain valuable work experience in the financial industry, which will help me advance further in my career.

Sean Whitfield is a graduate student on the men’s track and field team. He’s studying multimedia journalism and interning in video productions with the Minor Football League.

He expressed how he hopes to grow through his summer internship.

“I'm hoping to grow through the summer internship by learning more about the video production process and the small details that lead to major editing updates,” Whitfield said. “This will also allow me to understand if I'd like to pursue more of a career in sports or outside of sports. In turn, it will allow me to grow my network both personally and professionally.”
