Creating Home Away from Home: The Impact of Maryland’s ISA Working Group

Creating Home Away From Home

At the University of Maryland, the International Student-Athlete (ISA) Working Group is on a mission to enhance the experience of international student-athletes through intentional support, education, and community-building. Over the past year, this dedicated group has made strides in advocating for the needs of international Terps—and they’re only just getting started.

Who They Are

The ISA Working Group exists to improve the overall experience of international student-athletes at Maryland. The group’s mission centers around three key pillars: community, education, and compliance. Currently, the group is composed of:

Sydney Anderson
Sydney Anderson, Associate Director, Student-Athlete Development
Sydney Steinberg
Sydney Steinberg, Assistant Director, Barry and Mary Gossett Center
Jacqueline Taylor
Jacqueline Taylor, Academic Counselor

Together, they work to:

  • Improve the onboarding process for international student-athletes.
  • Streamline information relevant to the international experience.
  • Identify and promote points of contact within and beyond Maryland Athletics.
  • Foster an inclusive community among international student-athletes
  • Educate ISAs on key university and NCAA policies.
  • Document staff roles related to international support to sustain progress despite staff transitions.

What They've Accomplished

Over the past academic year, the ISA Working Group has launched several impactful initiatives aimed at raising awareness and supporting student-athletes both personally and professionally:

  • Monthly International Student-Athlete Highlights: Celebrating the stories, journeys, and achievements of Maryland’s international student-athletes through storytelling and social media.
  • International Student-Athlete LinkedIn Series: In April, the group led a LinkedIn campaign focused on the challenges international student-athletes face when entering the job market, whether back home or in the U.S. The series spotlighted real student-athlete stories, explored common employment barriers, and shared employer insights to help demystify post-graduation opportunities.

What’s Next: Expanding Support and Elevating Student Voices

Looking ahead, the ISA Working Group is introducing new initiatives designed to deepen its impact and strengthen the support system for ISAs across campus.

Student Liaisons: Bridging the Gap

This fall, the group will introduce a Student Liaison program. These liaisons—current international student-athletes—will act as direct connectors between the ISA Working Group and the broader international student-athlete community. By sharing lived experiences, providing feedback, and participating in planning efforts, these student leaders will help ensure that programming and communication remain relevant, timely, and effective.

Worldwide Terps Events: Community and Education in Action

The ISA Working Group also advises the Worldwide Terps student organization, which delivers both educational and community-building programming. These events cover topics like Optional Practical Training (OPT), Curricular Practical Training (CPT), taxes, and more, helping student-athletes navigate life outside of sport. At the same time, fun and engaging community events help ISAs build friendships, celebrate culture, and feel at home in College Park.

With the global student-athlete landscape constantly evolving, Maryland’s ISA Working Group remains unwavering in its commitment to ensuring that international Terps feel seen, heard, and supported. As they continue to expand their efforts this year, their message is clear:

You made the right decision in coming here—not only to grow as a student-athlete, but to find belonging. And we’re here to make sure you always feel that way.
