The University of Maryland Intercollegiate Athletic Department announced the latest Barry and Mary Gossett Fellows Program class. The program includes 33 rising student-athletes and will focus on developing them for their postgraduate career.
This year's Gossett Fellows experience has been intentionally redesigned around the idea that career readiness is a story written one chapter at a time. Guided by employer feedback, the curriculum introduces new experiences focused on professionalism, communication, confidence, and workplace readiness while encouraging students to become the authors of their own professional journey.
“One professional skill I hope to strengthen this year is being more confident when sharing my ideas,” wrestler Alex Uryniak said. “I enjoy analyzing information and working through problems, but I want to get better at explaining my thoughts clearly to other people. Whether I’m presenting an idea, working with a team, or talking with a mentor, I want to become more comfortable trusting my work and speaking up.”
Rooted in its “Books, Chapters” theme, this year’s program will feature monthly sessions designed to reflect a chapter that each student-athlete is writing and living out during their time in college.
Every student-athlete has a story to tell. Our goal is to help them write the next chapter with confidence, purpose, and the skills to thrive beyond Maryland. We want Fellows to recognize that career readiness isn't built in one workshop or one semester. Like any great story, growth happens chapter by chapter, experience by experience, and relationship by relationship. Growth is an ongoing story — one that they have sole control over how it turns out; reclaiming ownership and power over their career readiness.Maryland Made’s Adaeze Alaeze-Garbo
“By the end of this year, I hope to learn how I can operate more productively in the professional world, as well as understand what values I prioritize as a person,” track and field’s Simone Cooper said. “This year, I’m willing to step into unfamiliar spaces to build upon my own networks and personal relationships.”
Many student-athletes are entering their second year in the Gossett Fellows Program and are getting ready to take on their capstone projects. They’ll present their individual projects in the fall, and bring them to life during the spring semester.
“By the end of the year, I hope to learn about my greatest strengths that I’ll be able to leverage in my future workplace,” men’s lacrosse’s Tyler Coryea said. “If I could jump one year ahead, I would hope that I have created more relationships with my fellow students-athletes at UMD, and develop skills that will help me in my future career.”Men's Lacrosse's Tyler Coryea
The student-athletes will each read Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff throughout the year, as well as attend six sessions, one per month, each with a different “chapter” theme for the school year. Each chapter will provide student-athletes with crucial skills that will help set them up for life after college, with an emphasis on confidence, professionalism, communication and workplace readiness.
“I hope to learn more about my ability to grow outside of my comfort zone,” women’s soccer’s Taryn Raibon said. “I want to be more confident and recognize I am capable of handling challenges. I’m hoping to create meaningful connections with others who will challenge and inspire me.”

As the year kicks off, plenty of exciting opportunities await the members of the 2026-27 Gossett Fellows Cohort. They enter the school year with optimism and bright outlooks, and by the time it’s over, they’ll exit with confidence, communication skills, and countless tools to propel them into whatever comes their way next.
“After graduation, I hope to work in the business world and eventually become a Chief Operating Officer,” women’s lacrosse’s Kayla Gilmore said. “I like working with people, solving problems, and finding ways to help a business grow and succeed. I think the Gossett Fellows Program will help me build leadership skills, meet great mentors, and make connections that will help me in my future career. I'm excited to learn from others and grow both personally and professionally.”
