Growing up in Montreal, Quebec, Ashley Germain had always had a passion for track and field and knew it would one day lead her to continue her studies and athletic career in the United States.
"I was doing track at home in Montreal, and I always wanted to come to the U.S. for track, because I think track is bigger here. With Maryland, one of my coaches saw me at my Canadian Championships, and that's why I'm here."
Her journey to Maryland was unique and provided Germain with challenges. However, she also grasped the opportunity to adapt to her new environment - making Maryland her new home away from home.
"It was not easy. What allowed me to go through it was that I knew people who went through the same process, so I was able to ask questions. I knew some people from Montreal who went to Maryland. It was kind of hard, but we had the help and the resources," said Germain.
"Growing up, everything was French at home. It was different; the culture was different. Me switching languages was something, but I liked it. I wouldn't have done anything differently."
