Every person dreams of an opportunity to give back to someone or someplace that had a unique impact on their lives. Maryland women’s soccer alum Lindsay Simpson is doing that and more.

For Simpson, being a member of the Terps family has changed her life in so many ways, and she will always be indebted to the university for the impact it has had on her life, both personally and professionally.

“This is my family,” said Simpson. “When I see that ‘M’ somewhere on a car or when I see someone wearing a Terps shirt, it’s a natural conversation point. It’s something that just makes me feel at home. So I think for someone moving so far away from home at such a young age without a friend in the world up here, it created a family and a home for me. I will always feel indebted to Maryland for everything it's given me and every opportunity I’ve had. It gave me the opportunity to fulfill my lifelong dream of being a college soccer player. So for that, I’ll always want to do anything I can to give back and be a part of that world because it's meant so much to me in my life.”

“I came a long way from home. I didn’t have any family or friends in the area when I moved up here as a freshman and this became my family. The University of Maryland became my anchor. If you’d asked me as a freshman if I was going to still be living here in 2023, I probably would have said no way, it’s too cold up here. Yet here I am and more than anything this is my anchor.

Simpson is in a self-described third iteration as a member of the Maryland Terrapins community.

It began when she moved from Georgia to Maryland as an 18-year-old to continue her academic and athletic career. Then, she worked as the director of operations for the women’s soccer program after school. Now, she works to help with the Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) efforts for current women’s soccer athletes at Maryland.

Simpson and others hope to create opportunities for many student-athletes throughout the program and educate people who might still need to understand this current landscape in college athletics. It’s a mission she takes great pride in, and one she hopes is fruitful for current and future Maryland women’s soccer student-athletes.

“These athletes work incredibly hard, and to see them be able to profit off their image, their name, and everything they’ve worked towards is amazing. We need to keep fundraising and keep working hard so we can help these athletes get everything they’ve earned and continue to help our Terp family be competitive in this ever-changing landscape in college athletics.”

Simpson works countless hours trying to find ways to get alumni involved and engaging them in ways they can help improve the experience for student-athletes at Maryland. She credits her time working as the team’s director of operations in helping form her relationship with alumni and community partners. Her time in broadcasting and the front office with D.C. United has helped her cultivate partnerships to utilize sponsorship effectively and create unique business opportunities for student-athletes and prospective companies. The unique pathway she has taken within her career has given her the tools to be able to lead the efforts of the collective and to promote student-athletes to give them a chance to use the NIL space to its fullest potential.

Going forward, Simpson hopes to continue to be a part of Maryland Athletics in any capacity. Moving to College Park 19 years ago changed her life, and Maryland holds a special place in her heart. Its impact on her life now and in the future will always be felt.

Even now as I’ve gotten married and started a family of my own, Maryland has still been an important anchor point for me for almost 20 years now. I’m just incredibly proud to be a member of the Terp family.”
