2022-23 By The Numbers

The Spring 2023 issue of ONE MARYLAND Magazine recently arrived in the mailboxes of Terrapin Club members. ONE MARYLAND features stories of strength and perseverance, of determination and spirit. These stories define our athletics program, and this new magazine will allow us to share these stories with you. Maryland enjoyed another season of amazing accomplishments and successes. Here's a quick glance at some of what made 2022-23 memorable.

Maryland was one of two schools in the entire nation to win a football bowl game, a men's basketball NCAA Tournament game and a women's basketball NCAA Tournament game. The only other school to achieve that remarkable accomplishment was Tennessee.

Maryland had three Big Ten Champions in 2022-23 with the baseball, field hockey and men's soccer teams winning titles, finishing with the best records during the regular season. Baseball won back-to-back Big Ten titles to become the first conference team to achieve that since Indiana in 2013-14. For field hockey, it was the Terps' sixth Big Ten crown while men's soccer won its third and first since 2016.

Maryland had six programs rank in the Top 20 in the NCAA in home average attendance in 2022-23 led by men's lacrosse and women's lacrosse, both of which finished third in the nation in average attendance. Additionally, the following Terrapin teams were ranked in the Top 20 in home average attendance: field hockey (4th), men's soccer (7th), women's basketball (10th), and men's basketball (17th). Maryland was one of just six schools to rank in the Top 20 in attendance in both men's and women's basketball.

Six Maryland student-athletes were drafted in the first round of their respective sport's professional drafts. Baseball's Matt Shaw was selected 13th overall in the 2023 MLB Draft by the Chicago Cubs making him the highest draft pick in Maryland baseball history.

Throughout the 2022-23 season, 10 different Maryland teams were ranked in the Top 25 with five ranking in the Top 10 at some point during the year. Here's a look at the highest rankings for teams that appeared in the polls this season: men's lacrosse (#1), field hockey (#2), women's lacrosse (#2), women's basketball (#6), men's soccer (#6), men's basketball (#13), baseball (#13), gymnastics (#21), softball (#21) and wrestling (#22).

A total of 11 Maryland teams advanced to the NCAA postseason competition. In the fall, field hockey advanced to the NCAA Semifinals and men's soccer reached the second round. In the winter, women's basketball advanced to the Elite Eight, the men's basketball team played to the second round, the gymnastics program qualified for the NCAA Regionals, and wrestling sent five competitors to the NCAA Championships. In the spring, baseball, men's lacrosse, women's lacrosse, and women's golf all advanced to the NCAAs. Jeff Kline of the track & field program qualified for the NCAA Nationals in shot put.
