One Year After Groundbreaking, Gossett Basketball Performance Center Construction Fully Underway

Basketball Performance Center Update July 2024

COLLEGE PARK, MD – Just over one year since its groundbreaking ceremony, construction of the Barry P. Gossett Basketball Performance Center is fully underway having already achieved several milestones.

The facility, located adjacent to the XFINITY Center, broke ground on June 22, 2023 with Gossett in giving remarks to the crowd alongside Maryland President Darryll J. Pines, Barry P. Gossett Director of Athletics Damon Evans, women’s basketball head coach Brenda Frese, men’s basketball head coach Kevin Willard, and former Terrapin Club president Marlene Feldman. ESPN celebrity and Maryland alum Scott Van Pelt emceed the event noting the importance and the collective efforts in bringing the facility to life.

Since then, the facility has begun to take shape. Excavation was completed in February 2024 followed by the foundational work for the project. This summer the steel framing has gone up with completion of that process expected to conclude in July.

The next milestones include the pouring of concrete, the closing of the exterior, and work on the interior with substantial completion earmarked for Summer 2025.

To date, a total of 260 tons of steel make up the building with 1,707 cubic yards of concrete already poured with another 1,210 cubic yards remaining in the project.

The 44,000 square foot facility will feature a dedicated practice court, a centrally-located strength and conditioning facility, expanded locker rooms with cutting-edge technology, state-of-the-art athletic training areas with hydrotherapy, dedicated space for film study and game-planning, as well as large lounge areas and office space for both coaching staffs.

The facility will not only enhance the spaces for the basketball programs, but will also offer new spaces for other Maryland sports within the XFINITY Center. Currently used locker rooms, offices, and auxiliary spaces for the basketball teams will be redesigned and used for several Olympic Sports moving forward enhancing their programs.

In addition to the Barry P. Gossett Basketball Performance Center, the Stanley Bobb Baseball Development Center and the Softball Player Development Center - climate-controlled hitting and pitching facilities to allow for year round training - are both under construction and expected to be completed by the end of the year. The most recently completed project was the Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex, which officially opened in early 2024.
