Marcos Bronfman ’81, a Terrapin Club Past President and longtime supporter of Maryland Athletics and the University of Maryland, passed away on Oct. 31 after an arduous battle with aggressive cancer.

Bronfman was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1960 and grew up in Bethesda, Maryland. He attended Walt Whitman High School and graduated from the University of Maryland in 1981 with a business and management degree. He went on to earn an MBA from George Washington University and enjoyed a long career in finance and consulting, but his heart never left College Park.

He remained a passionate fan and supporter of the Terps his entire life. He was a member of Terrapin Loyal, which recognizes those who have given consistently to the University of Maryland for 30-plus years. If there was a home Maryland Athletics game, regardless of the sport, he was there. He was easy to spot at campus and community events, often wearing a Maryland flag sports coat or pants.

“Marcos’ passion and enthusiasm was not only unmatched, but also contagious,” said Kirby Mills, Senior Associate Athletic Director and Chief Development Officer. “You couldn’t help but walk away from a conversation with him feeling energized, invigorated and optimistic not only about the University of Maryland and Maryland Athletics, but life in general.”

Bronfman’s involvement with the University of Maryland stretched across campus. He was the President of the Terrapin Club Board of Directors from 2018-19, a member of the Flagship Society, which recognizes those with lifetime contributions of $250,000 or more to the university, a lifetime member of the University of Maryland Alumni Association, a season ticket holder to multiple sports and direct contributor to a dozen sports and more than 20 athletics funds.

"I can think of few people who were as dedicated to Maryland and Terrapin Athletics as Marcos," according to Mike Freiman who served on the Terrapin Club Board of Directors for many years with Marcos, including when Mike was President and Marcos was President Elect. "Marcos was a visible ambassador at many Terrapin sports events. He couldn't be missed in his signature wardrobe that brought a smile to everyone's face. He was a dedicated alumni, a loyal fan and a wonderful friend who we will all greatly miss."
