In an era where donations and financial resources can dominate college athletics, something as simple as a tee time can have one of the biggest impacts on our men’s and women’s golf student-athletes.
Numerous University of Maryland alums and friends of the Terps have welcomed Maryland’s Golf team to play and practice at some of the most exclusive and prestigious golf courses and clubs in the DMV and across the country over the past year.
“They are providing an experience that money can’t always buy when our team is invited to their clubs,” says Kelly Hovland, Maryland Women’s Golf Head Coach. “These opportunities allow our players to train in championship-level environments, experience different course conditions, and prepare for the level of competition we face throughout the season. But the impact goes well beyond golf. Spending a day on the course with our alumni connects our current student-athletes with the people who helped build the tradition of the University of Maryland and shows them what it means to be part of the Terp family long after graduation.”

Fostering these types of connections between alums and the community and Maryland Athletics’ programs, coaches and student-athletes is a pillar of the Terrapin Club’s efforts and a priority under Barry P. Gossett Director of Athletics Jim Smith.
“As a Maryland alum and a member of the [University of Maryland College Park] Foundation Trustees, I always look forward to opportunities to interact with current students,” said Gary Attman ‘76. “And as a golfer, the ability to connect with the University of Maryland golf teams is especially meaningful. As a result, I’m always glad to host our young golfers either at Caves Valley in Owings Mills or at the Bear’s Club in Jupiter, Fla. For the last two years, we’ve had the women’s team down to The Bear’s Club, and we’ve had a wonderful time. Those ladies can really play!”
“Investing and partnering in Maryland Athletics takes many forms in today’s collegiate athletics environment,” says Kirby Mills, Senior Associate Athletic Director and Chief Development Officer. “Our supporters at all levels who are raising their hands and providing access to courses and clubs are elevating our golf program and the student-athlete experience in a unique and tangible way.
“Our alums and friends of the programs have access to some of the best golf courses in the country, and every invitation makes a difference,” says Hovland. “We are incredibly grateful for every opportunity to spend a day on the course with them and for the continued support they provide Maryland Women’s Golf.”
“Playing a variety of golf courses challenges our student-athletes to adapt, think strategically, and develop into more complete players,” said John Phillips, Maryland Men’s Golf Head Coach. “These experiences build the confidence, versatility, and resilience needed to compete at the highest level.”
