Stuart Bowers ’81 and Mary Perry have made a seven-figure commitment to Maryland Athletics through a blended gift toward both student-athlete scholarships and the Field Hockey and Men’s Lacrosse programs.
Their gift includes annual cash support for both sports toward operations and student-athlete resources and the current Men’s Lacrosse facility project, as well as an estate gift toward endowments for both programs and an athletics scholarship endowment.
“We believe in the mission of college athletics and the approach the University of Maryland is taking in today’s changing landscape,” Stuart and Mary said. “Coaches like John [Tillman] and Missy [Meharg] are truly preparing their players for success in life, not just on the field, and [Barry P. Gossett Director of Athletics] Jim Smith has the same mindset. He is committed to developing future leaders and great people.”
Stuart and Mary are football, men’s basketball and men’s lacrosse season ticket members and Stuart has supported Maryland Athletics for more than 35 years. He is a past president of the Terrapin Club and currently serves on the University of Maryland College Park Foundation Board of Trustees. A government and politics major at the University of Maryland, Stuart is the retired president of Brokerage Solutions, SS&C Technologies following a long career in IT/operations management in the brokerage industry. His other roles included president of DST Brokerage Solutions and partner at Finix Business Strategies; and managing director at Legg Mason, where he spent 27 years.
Mary is a three-degree graduate of Boston University and spent 26 years on active duty for the United States Air Force. She specialized in international and national security law, served primarily at air bases overseas and worked for the Department of Defense General Counsel and for the Secretary of the Air Force following her time on active duty.
“Stuart and Mary are true partners in the collective effort to enhance Maryland Athletics,” said Jim Smith, Barry P. Gossett Director of Athletics. “They are present at games and events, supportive of our student-athletes’ endeavors on and off the playing surface, invested financially and passionate about sharing their love for the Terps with anyone who will listen.”

Meet your philanthropic goals, extend your generosity
Many donors generously support the University of Maryland through their estate or financial plans, or other planned gift arrangements. These forward-thinking donors demonstrate their steadfast commitment to future generations at UMD and help to ensure the university continues to be a world-class institution and source of Terrapin pride. A planned gift can provide a variety of benefits while providing significant support for Terps, including increasing current income, reducing income and/or estate taxes, and passing assets on to family members at reduced tax costs. Planned gifts can be made through cash, securities, retirement plans, life insurance, and real estate, among other avenues, and can be documented in the way that is best for the individual, including through wills, charitable gift annuities, charitable trusts and IRA rollover gifts.
Our campaign for the Fearless
Stuart and Mary’s gift supports Forward: The University of Maryland Campaign for the Fearless, a $2.5 billion fundraising initiative in support of expanding access to UMD's top-tier education, accelerating groundbreaking research and building stronger communities. Maryland Athletics aims to raise at least $350M as part of the Forward campaign, elevating priorities that fit into four fundraising objectives: Elevate a championship culture; empower young people to realize their full potential; mold tomorrow's leaders today; and foster success through community. Those interested in learning more about how they can participate in the Forward campaign are encouraged to click HERE or contact the Terrapin Club at 301-314-7020 or tclub@umd.edu.
