Terps In The Pros: Summer 2020
7/17/2020
With professional team sports starting back up in America, numerous Terps are getting ready to compete at the highest level over the next few weeks and months. Check out our full primer on the 59 Terps gearing up for the MLB, NBA, WNBA, PLL, MLL, MLS, and NWSL.
BASEBALL
Six former Terrapins were named to Major League Baseball clubs’ 60-man rosters and are currently preparing for the season in training camp. Maryland’s six representatives are the most of any Big Ten school. Last season, Mike Shawaryn (Boston Red Sox) and LaMonte Wade Jr. (Minnesota Twins) became the 26th and 27th Terps all-time to be named to MLB rosters. Kevin Smith (Toronto Blue Jays) looks to become the latest Maryland alum to break into the major leagues. Brett Cecil (St. Louis Cardinals), Adam Kolarek (Los Angeles Dodgers) and Brandon Lowe (Tampa Bay Rays) all bring multiple years of big-league experience to their organizations, while Lowe’s breakout 2019 campaign earned him a spot on the American League’s All-Star team. The 2020 MLB season is slated to get underway on July 23.

MEN'S BASKETBALL
Alex Len (Sacramento Kings) is the lone Maryland representative in the NBA Restart in Orlando, as the Atlanta Hawks (Bruno Fernando, Kevin Huerter) and Minnesota Timberwolves (Jake Layman) did not qualify. Len was traded from the Hawks to the Kings on Feb. 5 earlier this season. He appeared in nine games for the Kings prior to the season being postponed, averaging 6.6 points and 7.1 rebounds. On June 25, Len announced on Instagram he tested positive for coronavirus and immediately entered isolation. He is expected to join the Kings in Orlando once medically cleared.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Eight Terrapins are on WNBA rosters as the league gets set to open on July 25. All games will be played at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. Rookie Kaila Charles joins Terp alums Brionna Jones and Alyssa Thomas on the Connecticut Sun. Five Terps competed in last year’s WNBA Finals including Jones and Thomas with the Sun and Shatori Walker-Kimbrough, Kristi Toliver and Tianna Hawkins with the WNBA champion Washington Mystics. Opening weekend games (July 25-26) will be played on ABC, ESPN and the CBS Sports Network. Visit WNBA.com for the full list.

Twenty alumni will represent the Maryland lacrosse program this summer in the Premier Lacrosse League, which is set to begin its 2020 Championship series on Saturday, July 25. The two-week tournament hosted at Zions Bank Stadium, 30 minutes south of Salt Lake City, Utah will feature some of the world’s best players, including reigning 2019 MVP Matt Rambo (‘17) of the defending champion Whipsnakes Lacrosse Club. Fourteen Terps in all will be in action for the Whipsnakes this season, while assistant coach Jesse Bernhardt (‘13) will make his PLL debut for the Chrome Lacrosse Club. In all, Maryland’s 20 players named to PLL rosters this summer were the most of any college program, further cementing Maryland as one of the nation’s top producers of professional talent.
“I think right now John Haus might be one of the best middies in the league. [He] has it all."

MEN'S SOCCER
Maryland, as usual, will feature one of the largest contingents of alums in a domestic professional soccer competition, in this case the MLS is Back Tournament. The cup-style competition, which began on July 8 at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, is a one-off event to mark the league’s return to action after regular season play was halted in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Fourteen former Terps are in action for nine different clubs, with three Terps apiece on local favorite D.C. United and Toronto F.C. The group stage of the tournament, already in progress, will be completed July 23 before the knockout stages begin July 25. The MLS is Back Tournament Final will kickoff on August 11. Coverage for all matches can be found via MLS’ broadcast partners ESPN, Fox Sports and Univision/TUDN. Following completion of the tournament, the MLS regular season will resume with a revised schedule and culminate with the MLS Cup Playoffs.
“I think there are ways for teams to use the heat or their fitness or their tactics as an advantage. Teams that are more organized and disciplined I think will have some success in this tournament. That’s one of the things that we’ve stressed so much is being organized and disciplined and trying to control what we can control throughout the game. Hopefully that puts us in position to win games.”Zac MacMath - Real Salt Lake

I'm happy. I'm happy we're going to play, however long it's going to take. I'm just happy we're going back to a normal routine and the sooner the better."Chase Gasper - Minnesota United
“Something that I was admittedly a little worried about coming down here was the testing process. We were worried that testing would take a long time, but I can say now that it’s the complete opposite case since we’ve been here. As soon as I enter the testing room, I’m in and out of there in five minutes. Each team has their own window to get in there, so you’re not crossing over with other teams. You have your designated time slot, you get it done, and you’re out very quickly. I’m glad they’re testing at the rate that they are—pretty much every other day.”Graham Zusi - Sporting Kansas City

WOMEN'S SOCCER
Jasmyne Spencer ('11) has made three appearances for OL Reign of the National Women's Soccer League since the league resumed action in late June. Spencer is in her ninth season as a professional soccer player, returning to the pitch after suffering an ACL injury in the first match of her 2019 season.
