COLLEGE PARK, MD – The longest played series in Maryland men's basketball history will return to XFINITY Center this year as the Terps host Virginia on Friday, Nov. 13 as announced today. This will be the second meeting in the four-game series after the two teams met in Charlottesville last season.
Overall, Maryland and Virginia have played 185 games with the Terps holding a 108-77 record against the Cavaliers. The series began in 1913 and was played every year between 1924 and 2014 (except for the 1939-40 season).
Virginia also holds the distinction of being the final regular-season game Maryland played as a member of the ACC (both teams were charter members). The Terps outlasted No. 5 Virginia, 75-69, in overtime on March 9, 2014 to end the Cavaliers' 13-game winning streak. After losing the lead in the closing seconds of regulation, the Terps never trailed in the extra session in front of a sellout crowd of 17,950 in the XFINITY Center.
In the postseason, the two squads have met eight times in the ACC Tournament splitting those games. Despite their long history, the teams have never met in the NCAA or NIT Tournaments.
The series will return to Charlottesville for the 2027-28 season before the final game comes back to XFINITY for the 2028-29 campaign.
Throughout the 2026-27 season, Maryland will have a year-long celebration of the 25th anniversary of the program's 2002 NCAA National Championship, presented by Northrop Realty. Home games throughout the 2026-27 season will feature special promotions, giveaways, player appearances and autograph sessions, and more that will celebrate this truly historic milestone in Maryland Athletics history.
To coincide with the championship celebration, a special slate of limited-edition commemorative gifts will be available for season ticket members who renew or those who purchase for the first time by the June 30 deadline.
