The 2023 Maryland baseball team set a plethora of records, winning the program's first-ever Big Ten Tournament Championship and rewriting the offensive record books in College Park. Relive all of the moments and milestones as umterps.com visits Maryland Baseball: By The Numbers.

For the first time ever, Maryland captured the Big Ten Tournament title, going on an undefeated run and winning four games to clinch an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament. The Terps defeated Michigan State and Nebraska twice to reach the final, where they defeated No. 3 seed Iowa, 4-0.

In addition to winning the Big Ten Tournament, the Terps won their second consecutive Big Ten Championship, becoming the first team to repeat as Big Ten regular-season champions since Indiana. Maryland finished conference action with a 17-7 record, claiming the title on the last weekend of the season by taking the regular-season finale against Penn State, 7-4.

Maryland made its third consecutive NCAA Tournament, marking the first time in program history that the Terps have advanced to postseason play three years in a row.

Maryland’s bats brought the boom in 2023, as seven different Terps belted 10 or more home runs. Nick Lorusso and Matt Shaw led the pack with 26 and 24 dingers, respectively, while Ian Petrutz and Elijah Lambros tied for third by hitting 14 apiece. Matt Woods hit 12 long balls and Luke Shliger went yard on 11 occasions. Kevin Keister rounded out the bunch by launching 10 big flies.

Eight Terps earned All-Big Ten accolades, led by a 2023 Big Ten Player of the Year Matt Shaw, Nick Lorusso and Luke Shliger, who all earned All-Big Ten First Team honors. Jason Savacool and Ian Petrutz both earned Second Team selections, while Nick Dean and Elijah Lambros earned a spot on the third team. Kyle McCoy rounded out the postseason award selections by landing on the All-Big Ten Freshman Team.

The Terps offense was no stranger to putting runs on the board, as Maryland scored 10 or more runs in 22 of its 61 contests. In 12 of those games, the Terps scored at least 15 runs, and on three occasions, the bats broke out for 20 or more runs.

Maryland had a grand year at the plate, as the Terps launched 11 grand slams over the course of the 2023 season, tops in the country and third-most by any team in the history of collegiate baseball. The campaign started off hot with Maryland clearing the bases in each of its first three contests, which is believed to be the first time in college baseball history that a team has hit a grand slam in its first three games of the season. Nine different Terps joined in on the grand slam party, with Nick Lorusso and Ian Petrutz each blasting a pair.

Maryland won all eight of its Big Ten regular-season series, continuing a streak of 22 consecutive Big Ten series wins. The Terps have won all eight Big Ten series for back-to-back years, and have not lost a conference set since April 2021.

Luke Shliger was masterful at getting on base in 2023, as evidenced by his program-record 24 hit by pitches in a single season. His total ranked first among Big Ten hitters as he broke Maxwell Costes’ record of 22 set in 2022.

Nick Lorusso belted 26 home runs on the campaign, breaking Maryland’s single-season home run record set in 2022 by Chris Alleyne. Additionally, Matt Shaw tied Alleyne’s record, smashing 24 dingers in his junior year.

Nick Lorusso opened the year already in midseason form, starting off his final season with the Terps on a record-setting 31-game hitting streak. His two-month stretch shattered the program’s longest hitting streak of 19 games originally set by Garry Maddox in 1996.

Maryland finished 2023 with 42 victories, tying for the second-most wins in program history with the 2015 squad. Coupled with 48 wins in 2022, the Terps finished with 40+ wins in consecutive seasons for the second time ever, joining the 2014-15 teams.

Matt Shaw broke Maryland’s all-time home run record, finishing his illustrious career in College Park with 53 home runs. He took the program record with a solo shot against Georgetown, launching his 44th career blast to topple the record set by Paul Schager (1984-87).

Luke Shliger obliterated Maryland’s reached-base streak record, as he found his way on base in 61 consecutive contests.

Luke Shliger’s penchant for getting on base was apparent with his record-setting walk total. The junior catcher drew 69 walks, breaking the Maryland and Big Ten Conference records with a total that ranked second in the country.

After setting the single-season runs record in 2022 with 79, Luke Shliger obliterated his own record, scoring 93 times in 2023. He also broke the Big Ten’s single-season runs record, breaking the record of 90 set by Indiana’s Micky Morandini in 1986 to finish the campaign ranking first in the nation in runs scored.

Nick Lorusso took over as Maryland’s new single-season hit king by accumulating 100 hits across 61 contests. He became the first Terp to record 100 hits in a season while claiming the pole position on Maryland’s leaderboard from John McCurdy, who notched 98 hits in 2002. Lorusso also finished the season tied for the sixth-most hits in the country.

Nick Lorusso stood head and shoulders above the rest of the country in runs batted in, as the third baseman racked up 105 RBI in 2023 to sit atop the national leaderboard. In the process, Lorusso became the first player to cross the 100 RBI threshold in 20 seasons and eclipsed the Maryland program record for single-season RBI, exceeding Derek Hacopian’s mark of 83 set in 1992.

As a team, the Terps mashed 131 home runs in 2023, a mark that ranked second in the country. After slugging 137 dingers in 2022, Maryland became the first Division I program to reach 120+ home runs in consecutive seasons since LSU accomplished the feat between 1996-98.

Luke Shliger’s plate discipline over his career resulted in 138 walks during his time in a Maryland uniform, topping Chris Cannan (1991-94) for the all-time program base on balls record.

Rob Vaughn moved into the top five in program history for most career wins, finishing the season with 182 victories in his six seasons at the helm.

Nick Lorusso and Matt Shaw hold the joint record for most at-bats for Maryland in a single season, as both stars recorded 264 at-bats. The two pro prospects edged out Chris Alleyne’s 2022 record in the category.

After finishing the season with 95 strikeouts, Jason Savacool’s career strikeout total sits at 270, good for third-most in Maryland program history.

Maryland excelled at drawing walks in 2023, as the squad reached via base on balls 385 times in the campaign to set the program single-season record originally held by the 2022 roster.

The 2023 Terps were effective at driving in runs, setting the single-season team record with 552 RBI. Six different players recorded at least 50 RBI for Maryland, led by Nick Lorusso with his nation-leading 105.

With 578 runs scored on the season, Maryland smashed its single-season team runs record set in 2022. The team finished the season top 10 in the country in both runs scored and runs per game (9.2 per contest). Two Terps ranked among the top 10 in the country in run scoring, as Luke Shliger paced the country with 93 runs while Matt Shaw scored a career-best 80 runs to finish tied for sixth in the nation.

The Terps had a lineup of heavy hitters who compiled 684 hits in 2023, beating out the 2022 team that notched 683 hits the year prior. Five hitters picked up at least 70 hits on the season, led by Nick Lorusso with 100 and Matt Shaw with 90. Lorusso and Shaw were in elite company as one of three sets of teammates in the country to record 90+ hits in 2023.
