25 for 25: Top Student-Athletes of the Last 25 Years

Maryland Athletics is celebrating the first 25 years of the 21st century by looking back at some of the greatest Terps from all of our sports. Listed in alphabetical order, these Terps represented the best of the University of Maryland from 2001-25. Join us each week in the month of December as we look back at some of the greatest to ever don the red, white, black and gold.

Note: Student-athletes were selected based upon their performance from Jan. 2001 to Dec. 2025. Student-athletes needed to compete in at least two seasons during this 25-year period.

Megan Taylor

Women's Lacrosse • 2016-19

  • Led Maryland to NCAA Championships in 2017 (undefeated at 22-0) and 2019
  • 2020 James E. Sullivan Award finalist (First Lacrosse Player Ever) 
  • 2019 Tewaaraton Award winner (First Goalie Ever) and Honda Award winner
  • 2019 IWLCA National Player of the Year
  • Two-time IWLCA Goaltender of the Year (2017 & 2019)
  • Four-time Big Ten Goaltender of the Year (2016-19)
  • 2019 NCAA Tournament Most Valuable Player
  • Three-time IWLCA All-American
  • Second on Maryland’s career saves list with 740
Megan Taylor

Alyssa Thomas

Women's Basketball • 2010-14

  • Three-time All-American by WBCA, AP & USBWA (2012, 2013, 2014)
  • 2014 Mary Garber Award recipient as ACC Female Athlete of the Year
  • Led the Terps to the 2014 NCAA Final Four, earning 2014 NCAA Regional Most Outstanding Player, Two-time NCAA All-Regional Team (2012 and 2014)
  • Three-time ACC Player of the Year, only the second player in ACC history to achieve that feat
  • Four-time All-ACC (first-team in 2012, 2013, 2014, second-team in 2011), 2011 ACC Rookie of the Year, 2011 ACC All-Rookie Team, 2012 ACC Tournament MVP, Two-time All-ACC Tournament team (2012 and 2013)
  • Maryland's all-time leader in points (2,356), rebounds (1,235), scoring average (17.5 ppg), FG Made (890), FG Attempts (1,868), FT Made (557) and starts (135)
  • One of only three Terrapin women's basketball players in history with 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds
  • Set the school record for single-season rebounds with 381 in 2013-14
Alyssa Thomas had 16 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Terps to the NCAA Sweet 16 in 2014.

Kristi Toliver

Women's Basketball • 2005-09

  • Starting guard on the 2006 NCAA championship team, hit the biggest shot in program history to tie the NCAA title game and force overtime in 2006
  • 2008, 2009 WBCA, USBWA All-American; 2008 AP All-American
  • Three-time All-ACC Selection (2007, 2008, 2009)
  • 2009 ACC Player of the Year
  • Named to 2009 All-ACC Tournament First Team (first under head coach Brenda Frese)
  • Owns program records in career assists (751), three-pointers made (300), three-point field goal percentage (.408), free throw percentage (.866) and assists in a season (275) in 2007-08 season
Kristi Toliver

Greivis Vasquez

Men's Basketball • 2006-10

  • Winner of the 2010 Bob Cousy Award presented to the nation's top point guard (the first player in Maryland history to win a national position player of the year award)
  • 2010 All-American (First Team by Wooden Award, Fox Sports, The Sporting News; Second-Team by AP, Yahoo Sports)
  • 2010 ACC Player of the Year
  • Led Maryland to the 2010 ACC regular season championship
  • Three-time All-ACC (First Team in 2009 and 2010; Second-Team in 2008), making him one of just 15 players in Maryland men's basketball history to earn three all-conference selections
  • Named to the 2009 ACC All-Tournament team
  • Second on the all-time points list at Maryland (2,171) and is just the third player in school history to surpass 2,100 points, along with Juan Dixon and Len Bias
  • Hold school record for double-figure scoring games (117); second on the all-time assists list (772) and is one of only two players - along with Steve Blake - to surpass 700 assists in their careers
  • One of just two players in school history to record a triple-double (35 pts., 11 reb., 10 ast. vs. North Carolina on Feb. 21, 2009)

Men's Lacrosse • 2018-22

  • Led Maryland to an undefeated (18-0) National Championship season in 2022
  • 2022 Tewaaraton Award and Raymond Lt. Raymond Enners Memorial Award (Nation’s Most Outstanding Player) Winner
  • Three-time USILA All-American
  • Holds the Maryland career records in goals (205) and points (340)
  • One of just two student-athletes in men’s lacrosse history with more than 100 career goals and 100 career assists.
  • Set the program’s single-season record with 103 points in 2022
  • Seven career eight-point games, most in program history
  • Program record 40 hat tricks in his career
  • 2022 Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year
  • Three-time All-Big Ten
