Maryland Women In Sixth PlaceAfter Round One OfPenn State Golf Invite

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Freshman Erin Clasper (N. Potomac, Md.) shot a one-over par 71 to lead the Maryland women's golf team to sixth-place position after day one of the Nittany Lion Fall Invitational on the Penn State White Course here Friday. The Terps shot a school-record team-low round of 312 and had three golfers place in the top 40 during the day.
Clasper finished the first round with a school-record low 71 and is only two strokes off of the pace set by Sara Doell of Penn State. Doell was the only golfer to finish under par on day one. Pam Snowden of Oregon is in second place with an even par 70. Clasper's previous best round was an 81 (+9) at the Northern Arizona Invitational on Sept. 21.
Freshman Brooke Bendler (Salisbury, Md.) enters day two in a tie for 33rd place after shooting a 79 (+9). Her score is the second best of her career at Maryland. Freshman Jen Gibson (Havertown, Pa.) shot a 10 over par 80 in helping the Terps to the sixth place standing.
Day two of the event is Saturday. Maryland's previous best finish was 13th at the Northern Arizona Invitational. The Terps' round of 312 is the best round ever for the first-year team. Its previous best single-round team score was 328 during the Unlimited Potential Tournament in Myrtle Beach on Sept. 10-12.
