
Maryland Volleyball Team Concludes Home Portion of Schedule This Week

COLLEGE PARK, MD. - The University of Maryland volleyball team (10-12, 3-5 ACC) concludes the home portion of its 1999 schedule with three conference matches this week. On Tuesday, the Terps host Duke at 7 p.m. They then host Wake Forest on Friday at 7 p.m., and finish the week on Saturday against Florida State at 5 p.m. All matches will be played at Ritchie Coliseum. Senior outside hitters Beth Murphy (Golden, Colo.) and Kate Hannas (Ellicott City, Md.) will play for the final time at Ritchie Coliseum this week.
Scouting Maryland
Maryland enters the week 10-12 (3-5 ACC), having split a pair of conference matches last week. Last Friday, No. 15 Clemson defeated the Terps 15-9, 15-8, 15-9. The following day, however, Maryland rebounded with a dramatic 15-13, 13-15, 15-10, 11-15, 15-12 win over Georgia Tech.
Senior outside hitter Beth Murphy leads the Terps with 3.88 kills per game and 0.44 service aces per game. Senior outside hitter Kate Hannas tops the team with 2.55 digs per game and 1.06 blocks per game. In the Terps' two matches last week, sophomore setter Libby Alberts (Eden Prairie, Minn.) averaged 11 assists per game.
Scouting Duke
Duke enters the week with an 8-9 record (2-6 in the ACC). Last Friday, the Blue Devils were defeated by Wake Forest 15-12, 15-7, 15-4. Dominique Phillip had a team-high 11 kills against the Deacons while Julie Cowley and Pamela Gottfred combined for 44 assists. Gottfred was ranked seventh in last week's ACC statistics with 11.16 assists per game. Jill Sonne was ranked fourth in the conference with 1.22 blocks per game.
In the first meeting between the two teams this season, Duke pulled out a 15-7, 14-16, 11-15, 15-6, 17-15 victory in Durham, N.C., on Oct. 9. The Terps last defeated Duke on Nov. 19, 1998 in the first round of the ACC Tournament 15-2, 15-7, 11-15, 15-7.
Duke leads Maryland in the all-time series between the two schools 20-17.
Scouting Wake Forest
Wake Forest enters the week with a 18-5 record (5-3 in the ACC). The Demon Deacons have won five straight matches. Following its win over Duke on Friday, Wake Forest swept Georgia Southern on Sunday 15-4, 15-2, 15-3. Trina Maso de Moya leads the ACC with 4.35 digs per game and is ranked fifth with 3.93 kills per game. Jessica Hood is ranked sixth in the conference in hitting percentage (.315) and 10th in blocks per game (1.16).
Earlier this season, Wake Forest defeated Maryland on Oct. 8 in Winston-Salem, N.C., 16-14, 15-0, 15-6. The last Maryland win over the Deacons came on Sept. 26, 1998, as it won 15-7, 15-12, 12-15, 15-9.
Maryland leads its all-time series against Wake Forest 14-2.
Scouting Florida State
Florida State enters the week with a 7-13 record (1-7 in the ACC). The Seminoles, who won the ACC Tournament last season, got their first conference win this season on Sunday, defeating NC State 15-2, 16-14, 15-13. Aisha Thornton posted 14 kills in the victory. Thornton ranks second in the conference with a .374 hitting percentage and is fifth with 1.20 blocks per game. Norisha Campbell is third in the ACC with 1.29 blocks per game.
Earlier this season, the Terps defeated Florida State in Tallahassee, Fla., 15-6, 13-15, 15-8, 15-11. Maryland has won two straight matches against the Seminoles. Florida State last defeated Maryland 15-12, 15-2, 15-10 on Oct. 18, 1998.
Maryland leads its all-time series against Florida State 12-7.
Honoring the Seniors
With the conclusion of the 1999 home volleyball schedule comes the final appearance at Ritchie Coliseum for seniors Beth Murphy and Kate Hannas.
Last season, Murphy recorded 381 kills, 32 service aces and 330 digs. She transferred to Maryland prior to the 1998 season after playing her first two seasons at Duquesne.
Hannas has played for the Terps all four season of her collegiate career. She was a member of the 1996 ACC championship team that advanced to the NCAA Tournament and a starter on the 1997 squad that also advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Last season, Hannas posted career-highs in kills (220) and digs (240). She also posted 77 kills in both 1997 and 1998.
Daily Double
Freshman outside hitter Carey Brennan (Smithsburg, Md.) posted 12 kills and 10 digs against Clemson on Oct. 15, and 12 kills and 19 digs against Georgia Tech on Oct. 16. Including both those matches, she has posted five double-doubles in her just first season of collegiate volleyball.

Junior middle hitter Nnenna Amobi (Silver Spring, Md.) posted a career-high 18 kills against Georgia Tech on Oct. 16 and recorded a season-high three service aces. She posted 18 kills and committed six errors in 36 attack attempts on her way to a .333 hitting percentage against the Yellow Jackets.
Another Career Night
Sophomore setter Libby Alberts turned in a career game against Georgia Tech on Oct. 16, posting nine kills, 62 assists and 26 digs. She finished just one kill shy of recording a triple-double.
Alberts nine kills was a career high. In 22 attack attempts, she committed just one error and finished up with a .364 hitting percentage. Her career high in assists is 71 (set against NC State on Oct. 7, 1998) and her career high in digs is 29 (set against Virginia on Nov. 20, 1998).
Taking it to the Limit
Maryland's five-game win over Georgia Tech on Oct. 16 marked the fourth time this season it has gone the full five games in a match. The Terps evened out their record in five-game matches (2-2) with the win over the Yellow Jackets.

Service Ace
In last week's ACC statistics, Maryland ranked second as a team with 1.89 service aces per game. Only Georgia Tech, with 2.16 service aces per game, was ranked ahead of the Terps.
60 and Counting....
With 62 assists against Georgia Tech Oct. 16, sophomore setter Libby Alberts has now dished out 60 or more assists six times during her career at Maryland. She turned in a season-high 65 assists against Akron on Sept. 4 and a career-high 71 assists against NC State on Oct. 7, 1998.

Murphy through 22 Matches....
With 22 matches in the books so far this season, and with eight more remaining before the ACC Tournament, senior outside hitter Beth Murphy has recorded 318 kills. Former Terp Colleen Hurley's 493 kills in 1990 is the current school record. Last season, Murphy posted 381 kills which is the 10th-best single-season effort in Maryland history.
