
Field Hockey Faces Showdown For ACC Title

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland field hockey team (16-1, 3-0 ACC), which has won a near school -record 14 consecutive games, travels to Chapel Hill, N.C., to play No. 4 North Carolina in its only game this week. A victory over the Tar Heels would give the Terps the regular season ACC championship and the top seed in the ACC Tournament. The Terps close out their regular season schedule as they travel to Richmond to face the Spiders on Nov. 1 at 3 p.m. That game was rescheduled from Sept. 5 after it was rained out by Hurricane Dennis.

Terps Approach Consecutive Wins Record
Maryland has won 14 consecutive games entering its matchup against North Carolina on Oct. 23. The Terps' 14-game winning streak leaves the Terps only one victory from tying the school record of 15 which was set during the 1993 season. Maryland has outscored its opponents 89-15 and posted five shutouts during the streak.

Terps Establish School Record For Goals
Maryland has scored a school-record 103 goals this season. The Terps broke the record of 98 in their victory over Princeton on Oct. 15. Junior Keli Smith (Selinsgrove, Pa.) scored the record-breaker against Princeton as she scored Maryland's sixth goal in its 8-2 victory over the Tigers. Maryland's 1997 team scored 98 goals.

Terps Run Home Winning Streak to 26
Maryland's victory over Old Dominion on Oct. 2 ran its consecutive home regular-season victory streak to 26 games. Maryland was 12-0 at home during the 1999 regular season, 11-0 during the 1998 season and won its final three regular season home games during the 1997 season. The Terps have not lost a regular season home game since Oct. 5, 1997.

Terps Win 16 Games For Third Straight Year
Maryland's 16 victories during the 1999 season marks the third consecutive year the Terps have won at least 16 games. The Terps also won 16 games last season as they won the ACC Tournament championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals. Maryland's 16 victories this season is tied for the sixth-most victories in a single season in school history.

Tagliente Is Player Of The Week
Junior forward Carla Tagliente (Cortland, N.Y.) was named the ACC Player of the Week for the week ending Oct. 10. She enjoyed one of the more impressive statistical weeks in ACC play this season as she led the Terps to three victories. Tagliente scored eight goals and recorded two assists for a total of 18 points in Maryland's three victories. She scored hat tricks against both No. 10 James Madison and Rutgers and scored two goals and added two assists against Radford. Tagliente entered the week with 10 goals and 23 total points and closed the week with 18 goals and 41 total points.
Tagliente Ranks Fourth in Points
Junior Carla Tagliente is ranked fourth in school history with 128 total career points. She recorded a career-high three assists in Maryland's 8-2 victory over Princeton. She is only the fourth player in school history to score 125 or more career points.

Palchinsky Nets Game Winner
Sophomore Kristy Palchinsky (Leonardtown, Md.) scored her third game-winning goal of the season as the Terps defeated No. 6 Old Dominion, 2-0, on Oct. 17. Palchinsky tied her single-game career-high with two goals as the Terps defeated the Monarchs for the fourth consecutive time at home during the regular season. Palchinsky has scored eight goals for a total of 16 points in 17 games played this season. As a freshman in 1998, she played in six games and did not score a point.
Hiskins' 27 Assists Ranks No. 2
Junior Rachel Hiskins (Victoria, Australia) recorded five assists in Maryland's two victories last week to bring her 1999 total to 27. Her 27 assists ranks as the second-highest single-season total in school history. She trails only Jen Pratt who recorded 33 assists in 22 games during the 1997 season.

Hohnstine With 10 Stops
Sophomore Ashley Hohnstine (Oak Hill, Va.) recorded a career-high 10 saves in Maryland's 2-0 victory over Old Dominion. In 105 minutes played against Princeton and Old Dominion last week, Hohnstine recorded 16 saves and did not allow a goal. She has not allowed a goal in her last three outings which totals 140 minutes. She has allowed only six goals in 13 appearances and has an 11-0 record as a starter.
Smith Continues Streak
Junior tri-captain Keli Smith continued her hot hand with two goals and two assists in Maryland's pair of victories last week. Smith scored two goals against the Tigers as the Terps won, 8-2, to mark the second time this season that she has scored multiple goals in a game. Her two assists against the Tigers brought her season assist total to a career-high 15 which is the eighth-best single-season total in school history.
Welsh Continues to Assist
Sophomore Autumn Welsh (Allentown, Pa.) recorded two assists against Old Dominion to bring her 1999 total to 15. Her 15 assists rank as the eighth-highest single-season total in school history. Welsh has been credited with 15 assists in 17 games this season, she was credited with one assist in 21 games as a freshman in 1998.
Klingerman Leads Newcomers
Redshirt freshman Angie Klingerman (Bloomsburg, Pa.) is the leading goal scorer among first-year players. She has recorded 11 goals as she has played in all 17 games. She ranks fifth on the team in goals and total points (23) and first among first-year players in goals and total points.
Messimer Scores 10th Goal
Freshman Carissa Messimer (Mountaintop, Pa.) scored her 10th goal of the season against Princeton. Messimer's goal against the Tigers proved to be the game-winner -- her third of the season. Messimer's 10 goals are tied for the fifth highest total among all Terp players while her 22 points rank her seventh.
