STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Freshman Erin Clasper (N. Potomac, Md.) remained near the top of the leader board with a six-over par 76, and the Maryland women's golf team is tied for eighth following day two of the Nittany Lion Fall Invitational on the Penn State White Course. Clapser is in seventh place among the 107 golfers as Maryland competes in only the third tournament in school history.
Clasper followed her first day 71 with a 76 and begins play on day three only nine strokes behind the leader, Pam Sowden of Oregon. Sowden shot a two-under par 68 as Oregon jumped to a three-stoke lead over Penn State. After 36 holes, the No. 19 Ducks are in the top spot with a 586. Host Penn State is second at 589, while Louisville is third at 606 and Maryland is tied for eighth at 629.
Freshman Jen Gibson (Havertown, Pa.) shot the second-best round of the day for the Terps with a seven over-par 77. She improved her score by three strokes from day one of the event. Freshman Holly Thornton (Delran, Pa.) enjoyed the best improvement among the Terps with a nine over-par 79. She lowered her score by 10 strokes from her round one score of 89.
Sophomore Brooke Bendler (Salisbury, Md.) and freshman Carter Crowther (Kilmarnock, Va.) are tied for 76th place in the individual standings. Both players have totaled 167 during the first two rounds.
The third and final round play begins at 9 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 3, with a shotgun start at the par 70, 5,918-yard course.
