Terps Finish Tied For Fourth At Great Smokies Women's Golf Championship

Waynesville, N.C. - Freshman Carter Crowther (Kilmarnock, Va.) finished tied for fourth and freshman Erin Clasper (N. Potomac, Md.) finished tied for 10th to lead the Maryland women's golf team to a fourth place finish at the Great Smokies Championship at the Waynesville Country Club as play concluded Tuesday. The Terps finished in a three-way tie for fourth marking the highest team finish in the short two-month history of the program.
Crowther's seventh place finish marked the highest individual finish, in this, the first fall of competition for the team. She shot a 76+81=157 (+13) for the event. Her 157 total and +13 mark against par are the best two-round tournament marks in team history. Clasper's 10th place finish marked the first time two Terp golfers had finished among the top ten in any of the four tournaments the team played this fall. In addition, Clasper's second round score of 77 (+5) was the third-best single-round score against par while her 158 for the tournament is the second best during the fall season behind only Crowther's 157.
Maryland finished tied for fourth place with Elon College and East Tennessee State with a two-round score of 647. The Terps finished only 19 strokes behind tournament champion Tennessee Tech. Maryland's score of 647 is its best team score in a two-round tournament this fall.
Freshmen Jen Gibson (Havertown, Pa.) finished in a tie for 40th place (165, +21) while sophomore Brooke Bendler (Salisbury, Md.) finished in a tie for 48th place with a two day total of 167 (+23)
Maryland begins its spring schedule on Feb. 26, 2000 as it competes at the Carolina's Classic in Pinehurst, N.C.
