
Maryland Volleyball Team Faces UMBC, Travels to Wake Forest and Duke

COLLEGE PARK, MD. - The University of Maryland volleyball team (8-9, 2-2 ACC) continues its schedule this week with three matches. On Tuesday, the Terps host UMBC at 7 p.m. at Ritchie Coliseum. On Friday, the Terps travel to Wake Forest to take on the Demon Deacons at 7 p.m., and on Saturday, Maryland concludes the week by heading down to Duke to face the Blue Devils at 7:30 p.m.
Scouting Maryland
Maryland enters the week 8-9 (2-2 ACC), having split a pair of ACC matches last week. On Tuesday, the Terps lost to Virginia 15-13, 15-2, 15-7 at Ritchie Coliseum, but on Saturday, they bounced back by defeating Florida State on the road 15-6, 13-15, 15-8, 15-11.
Senior outside hitter Beth Murphy (Golden, Colo.) continues to pace the Terps with 4.01 kills per game and 0.45 aces per game. Last week, she was ranked fourth in the ACC in kills per game and third in aces per game.
Senior Kate Hannas (Ellicott City, Md.) leads Maryland with 1.16 blocks per game and 2.47 digs per game. Last week, she ranked 10th in the ACC in kills per game.
Freshman setter Lindsay Davey (Aurora, Colo.) has taken over the starting setter position and in Maryland's two matches last week, she averaged 11.86 assists per game.
Scouting UMBC
UMBC enters the week with a 7-8 record. The Retrievers are coached by Felix Hou, who was an assistant coach at Maryland for four years before accepting the head coaching position at UMBC this past summer. In its last action, UMBC took two out of three matches at the Rutgers Doubletree Classic Sept. 24-25. The Retrievers defeated Northeastern 3-0 and host Rutgers 3-1, but lost to Brown 3-0. Senior outside hitter Jill Riding was named the Northeast Conference Player of the Week following the Rutgers Doubletree Classic. Maryland has never lost to UMBC, having won all nine previous matches. Last season, the Terps defeated the Retrievers 15-10, 14-16, 15-13, 15-12 on Sept. 8. Current sophomore setter Libby Alberts (Eden Prairie, Minn.) recorded 46 assists in the victory.
Scouting Wake Forest
Wake Forest enters the week with a record of 13-5 (2-3 ACC). The Deacons lost a tough five-game match to North Carolina on Saturday 15-4, 15-10, 13-15, 8-15, 15-13 in Chapel Hill, N.C. Sharon Harmsworth tallied 18 kills and 12 digs against the Tar Heels. Trina Maso de Moya had a match-high 27 digs and 15 kills, and Julie Cowley added 21 digs. Jessica Hood was ranked fifth in the ACC last week with a .317 attack percentage, Taso de Moya led the conference with 4.57 digs per game and was also ranked sixth with 3.77 kills per game, Cowley was ranked second with 12.60 assists per game and Hood was ranked sixth with 1.24 blocks per game. Maryland leads its all-time series against Wake Forest 13-1. Last season, the Terps beat the Deacons Sept. 26 15-7, 15-12, 12-15, 15-9 in Winston-Salem N.C., but the Deacons won the rematch on Nov. 10 at Ritchie Coliseum 16-14, 15-11, 15-11.
Scouting Duke
Duke enters the week with a record of 5-7 (1-3 ACC). Last Saturday, however, the Blue Devils fell to NC State 15-4, 8-15, 15-8, 15-17, 15-9. Dominiue Phillip paced the Blue Devils against the Wolfpack with 15 kills and 11 digs. Nina Rybak recorded 45 assists and 10 digs. Last week, Jami Ediger was ranked fifth in the ACC with 0.46 service aces per game and fourth with 1.32 blocks per game. Phillip was ranked seventh with 0.41 service aces per game and Jill Sonne was ranked second with 1.46 blocks per game. Maryland trails in its all-time series against Duke 19-17. Last season, the Terps took two out of three matches from the Blue Devils, losing 15-5, 15-12, 15-2 on Sept. 25 in Durham, N.C., winning 10-15, 16-14, 15-6, 15-13 on Nov. 14 at Ritchie Coliseum, and coming out on top 15-2, 15-7, 11-15, 15-7 in the first round of the ACC Tournament Nov. 19 at Ritchie Coliseum.
Welcome Back Felix
Maryland's match against UMBC on Tuesday marks a homecoming for current UMBC head coach Felix Hou, who was an assistant at Maryland the previous four seasons. During Hou's stay at Maryland, the Terps won the 1996 ACC tournament championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 1995, 1996 and 1997.

Freshman setter Lindsay Davey has emerged as the starting setter the past three matches. During that span, she has averaged 10.8 assists per game. In the Terps' two matches last week, she averaged 11.86 assists per game.

Double Digits
Freshman outside hitter Carey Brennan (Smithsburg, Md.) posted a team-high 14 kills in the Terps' victory over Florida State Oct. 1. Including her performance against the Seminoles, she now has eight matches with 10 or more kills this season.

Murphy Through 17 Matches....
With 17 matches in the books so far this season, and with 13 more remaining before the ACC Tournament, senior outside hitter Beth Murphy has recorded 249 kills. At her current pace, she will have 439 kills by the time the ACC Tournament starts, which would be the fourth-highest, single-season kill total in school history. Former Terp Colleen Hurley's 493 kills in 1990 is the current school record. Last season, Murphy posted 381 kills which is the 10th-best single-season effort in Maryland history.
