Women's Golf Finishes Seventh At Nittany Lion Invitational

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Led by freshman Erin Clapser's (N. Potomac, Md.) 12th place individual finish, the University of Maryland women's golf team finished in seventh place at the Penn State Nittany Lion Fall Invitational. Clasper's individual finish and the team finish are the highest ever in the two-month history of the program. The Terps maintained their consistency as they were in sixth place after day one, seventh place after day two and finished in seventh. The team concludes its fall schedule as it travels to the Waynesville (N.C) Country Club to participate in the Great Smokies Championship in three weeks (Oct. 25-26).
Clapser Leads Terps at Nittany Lion Invitational Freshman Erin Clasper played her best golf of the fall season with a three-round average of 74.6 at last week's Nittany Lion Invitational. She finished all three rounds of the tournament with scores in the 70's and finished within 14 strokes of par for the tournament. She shot a school-record low 71 on the first day of the event and followed with a 76 on day two and a 77 on day three. Clasper's scores were personal-bests and marked the first time in her collegiate career that she had shot any round in the 70's. She finished tied for sixth among the 107 golfers with six birdies during the tournament.
Gibson Continues To Play Well Freshman Jen Gibson (Havertown, Pa.) played well at the Nittany Lion Invitational as she shot identical rounds of 77 during the second and third rounds of the tournament. She improved her final individual placement by three spots from day two and by seven spots following her day one score. Gibson leads the Terps with an 80.13 stroke average in three tournaments this fall. Her two rounds of 77 were her best rounds of her collegiate career.
Bendler and Crowther With Personal Bests Of 75 Sophomore Brooke Bendler (Salisbury, Md.) and freshman Carter Crowther (Kilmarnick, Va.) shot personal collegiate low scores of 75 in round three of the Nittany Lion invitational and finished with identical tournament scores of 242. The pair finished in a tie for 56th place. Bendler has been among the top three Terp individual finishers at all three tournament during the fall while Crowther earned her highest finish at the Nittany Lion Invitational.
Thornton With A Maryland First Freshman Holly Thornton (Delran, N.J.) carded the first eagle in the history of the program on day two of the Nittany Lion Invitational. She improved her score by 10 strokes and improved her individual finish by 11 positions on day two. Thornton finished the tournament as she shot a personal collegiate best 75 during the third round.
Maryland Notes From The Nittany Lion Invitational Erin Clasper's one over-par 71 on day one of the tournament was the best round in the two-month history of the Terp women's program ... Maryland's lineup shot the top six and 10 of the top 11 individual rounds ... Erin Clasper (71), Brooke Bendler (75), Jennifer Gibson (77), Carter Crowther (75), Holly Thornton (78) and Lori Koch (Baltimore, Md.) (85) all recorded personal best rounds ... Maryland shot the three lowest rounds team rounds (304, 312, 317) in school history ... The Terps' 304 score in day three was an improvement of 33 strokes from the first round in school history (337) on Sept. 10 at the Unlimited Potential /Baytree Classic on Sept. 10.
