
Maryland Volleyball Team Heads To Virginia

COLLEGE PARK, MD. - The University of Maryland volleyball team (11-16, 4-9 ACC) travels to Virginia on Friday for its only match of the week, as it faces the Cavaliers at 7 p.m. The Terps are in the middle of a five-match road swing, having gone to Georgia Tech and Clemson last week and heading to NC State and North Carolina next week.
Scouting Maryland
Maryland enters the week with a record of 11-16 (4-9 in the ACC) following back-to-back matches against Georgia Tech and Clemson last week. The Terps fell to the Yellow Jackets 15-9, 15-9, 15-13 on Friday and to the No. 14 Tigers 15-4, 15-11, 15-6 on Saturday.
Senior Beth Murphy (Golden, Colo.) leads the Terps with 374 kills and is averaging a team-high 3.78 kills per game. She needs just seven kills to tie her career high of 381 kills last season, which is the 10th-highest single-season total in school history. In last week's ACC statistics, Murphy ranked seventh in the conference in kills per game (3.88) and seventh in service aces per game (0.43).
Fellow senior Kate Hannas (Ellicott City, Md.) leads the Terps with 2.74 digs per game and 1.04 total blocks per game.
Sophomore setter Libby Alberts (Eden Prairie, Minn.) is averaging 8.44 assists per game.
Scouting Virginia
Virginia enters the week with a 15-8 record (8-4 in the ACC). The Cavaliers are coming off a tough week, having lost to Clemson on Friday and Georgia Tech on Saturday. Virginia is led by Jessica Parsons, who was 10th in last week's ACC statistics with 3.78 kills per game and seventh with 1.12 blocks per game. Mary Frances Scott was ranked second with 13.42 assists per game and eighth with 0.37 service aces per game. Deanna Zwarich was 10th with 3.68 kills per game. Katie Jones was fourth with 0.43 service aces per game and 3.11 digs per game. As a team, the Cavaliers were ranked second with 14.80 assists per game and third both in service aces per game (1.84) and kills per game (1.84).
The Series Against Virginia
Maryland leads in its all-time series against Virginia 25-7. The Cavaliers, however, defeated the Terps earlier this season on Sept. 28 at Ritchie Coliseum 15-13, 15-2, 15-7. Kate Hannas posted a double-double in that match with 11 kills and 14 digs. Beth Murphy posted a team-high 12 kills. Last season, Virginia swept the season series from Maryland, winning 15-6, 15-12, 15-12 on Oct. 13 in Charlottesville, Va., 15-3, 15-6, 15-8 on Oct. 30 at Ritchie Coliseum and pulling out an 11-15, 15-8, 15-13, 6-15, 15-7 win in the second round of the ACC Tournament on Nov. 20 at Ritchie Coliseum. Libby Alberts posted 61 assists and a career-high 29 digs in the Nov. 20 match. The last time the Terps defeated the Cavaliers was on Nov. 4, 1997 at Ritchie Coliseum as they took a 15-5, 15-4, 15-10 decision.
Murphy Approaching 400 Kills
With 375 kills, senior Beth Murphy is just 25 kills away from becoming the sixth player in Maryland history to post 400 or more kills in a single season. Last season, she posted a career-high 381 kills, which is currently the 10th-highest single-season total in school history. Former Terp Coleen Hurley posted a school-record 493 kills in 1990. Elizabeth Efron had the second-highest number of kills in a season (465 kills in 1997), followed by Daune Koester (419 in 1996), Sheila Fearnow (404 in 1986) and Kelly Malins (401 in 1994).
Murphy has posted 20 or more kills five times this season, including a career-high 27 kills against NC State on Sept. 25 and a then career-high 26 kills against James Madison on Sept. 7. Her other 20-plus kill efforts this season have come against Duke on Oct. 9 (23 kills), Akron on Sept. 4 (21 kills) and George Mason on Sept. 14 (20 kills).
For her career at Maryland, Murphy has posted 20 or more kills in a match seven times.
