COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The No. 1-ranked Maryland field hockey team (20-1, 4-0 ACC, 2-0 ACC Tournament) defeated Wake Forest, 2-1, in double overtime on Nov. 7 in the ACC Tournament championship game to win the 1999 ACC title. It marked the second consecutive season that the Terps had won the ACC championship. The Terps also won the championship in 1992

Terps Win ACC Field Hockey Championship
Junior All-American Carla Tagliente (Cortland, N.Y.) scored the game-winning goal in the second overtime period to lead Maryland to a 2-1 victory over Wake Forest in the championship game of the 1999 Atlantic Coast Conference field hockey tournament at Kentner Stadium on Nov. 7. Tagliente's unassisted goal with 13:09 remaining in the second overtime period lifted the No. 1-ranked Terps to their second consecutive conference crown. The goal came on a breakaway and deflected off Wake Forest goalie Meghan Nitka as it sailed into the net. Maryland got on the scoreboard early as Keli Smith (Selinsgrove, Pa.) scored with only 1:33 elapsed in the first half. Sophomore Caroline Walter (Reilingen, Germany), the ACC Player of the Year, was credited with an assist on the play. Wake Forest's only goal of the game came with 27:49 remaining in the second half when Amy Marchell scored an unassisted goal. Maryland outshot Wake Forest, 15-9, including a game-high six shots by Tagliente. Sophomore goalie Ashley Hohnstine (Oak Hill, Va.) recorded seven saves while Wake's Nitka was credited with 10 stops.
Tagliente Named ACC Tournament MVP
Junior All-American Carla Tagliente, who scored the game-winning goal in Sunday's Atlantic Coast Conference field hockey championship game, was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player in a vote by the league's five head coaches. Tagliente scored two goals in two games as the Terps won their second consecutive ACC title. Junior Keli Smith and sophomore Caroline Walter were named to the all-tournament team. The honors marked the first for Tagliente and Smith while Walter has now earned ACC all-tournament honors in two consecutive years. Walter was named as the 1999 ACC Player of the Year while she, Tagliente and Smith all earned All-ACC honors for the 1999 season.
Terps' 20 Wins Are Second Most Ever
Maryland's 20 victories are the second-highest single-season victory total in school history. The school record for victories in a single season is 21 during the 1993 national championship season.

Terps Ranked No. 1
Maryland claimed the No. 1 ranking in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association poll when it was released on Nov. 2. The Terps, who were ranked No. 1 in the Sports Illustrated for Women's poll, passed the former top team, Connecticut, in the rankings on the strength of a 16-game winning-streak and a tough schedule. The winning streak has come against nine teams ranked in the top 20, including the Terps' Oct. 23 victory over No. 5 North Carolina and former No. 1 Old Dominion on Oct. 17. The Terps are undefeated in the ACC, a league where all five teams are ranked in the top 11.
Terps With 18 Consecutive Wins
Maryland has won a school-record 18 consecutive games entering the NCAA Tournament. The Terps' 18-game winning streak betters by three the school previous mark which was set during the 1993 season. Maryland has outscored its opponents 100-17 and posted six shutouts during the streak.

Terps Claim ACC Season Title
Maryland won its third ACC regular-season title as it defeated North Carolina, 2-1 in double overtime, on Oct. 23. The Terps' victory over the Tar Heels gave the team a 4-0 conference mark. It marked the first time since 1993 that the Terps had won the regular season ACC title. Maryland also won the ACC regular season championship in 1991.
Walter Is Player Of The Year
Sophomore forward Caroline Walter, who has helped lead the Maryland field hockey team to the nation's No. 1 ranking and to the 1999 Atlantic Coast Conference tournament championship, was selected as the ACC PLAYER OF THE YEAR in a vote by the league's five head coaches. Walter was also named as a member of the All-ACC team. Walter has scored a career-high 23 goals and added nine assists for a career-high 55 total points this season. Walter is one of only six players in the nation who has scored 20 or more goals this season and has scored at least one goal in 15 of Maryland's 21 games.

Walter Among National Leaders
Sophomore Caroline Walter (Reilingen, Germany) is tied for seventh in the nation in total points (54) and 10th in points per game (2.57). She is one of only six players in the nation who has scored 20 or more goals this season and she has scored at least one goal in 15 of Maryland's 21 games.
Hohnstine Leads Nation
Sophomore Ashley Hohnstine (Oak Hill, Va.) is the nation's leader in goals against average with a 0.59 mark and ranks sixth in save percentage (.857). Hohnstine is the top-ranked goalie in the ACC in goals against average and save percentage. She recorded a career-high 10 saves against Old Dominion in Maryland's 2-0 victory on Oct. 17 and has allowed one goal in her last 282 minutes played. In 353 minutes in ACC competition this season she allowed only two goals.

Sophomore Ashley Hohnstine has a 5-0 record against ACC competition this season. She has recorded complete-game shutouts against Wake Forest (Sept. 25) and Virginia (Nov. 4) and held Virginia scoreless in 48 minutes of play on Oct. 2 in College Park.

Smith Among Nation's Best
Junior Keli Smith (Selinsgrove, Pa.) is enjoying the best season of her three-year career. She has totaled 38 points (11 goals, 16 assists) this season as compared to her 40 points (17 goals, six assists) during her first two seasons. She scored her first career hat trick against Virginia Commonwealth on Aug. 29 and has more assists in the last nine games (seven) than she had during her first two seasons combined (six). Nationally, Smith is tied for 16th in assists (16) and 18th in assists per game (0.83).
Defense Is Stingy With Welsh
Maryland's defense is ranked eighth in the nation, and sophomore Autumn Welsh (Allentown, Pa.) has played a large role in the Terps earning that ranking. She has started all 21 games and recorded three crucial defensive saves in Maryland's victory over No. 5 North Carolina on Oct. 23. In eight games against the top 15 highest-scoring teams in the nation, Welsh has helped Maryland hold each team below its season scoring average.

The Hiskins Ledger
Junior Rachel Hiskins (Victoria, Australia) ranks third in the nation in total points (60), fifth in points per game (3.16), second in assists (30) and second in assists per game (1.5). She has started 41 consecutive games (including all 19 this season) and has scored at least one goal in five of her last six ACC games. In addition, she was credited with a career-high and program-tying record four assists against Towson (Sept. 15) and Princeton (Oct. 15) this season. She is one of only two players in school history with four assists in multiple games during her career. Former Terp All-American Jen Pratt recorded four assists twice during the 1997 season.
The Tagliente Progression
Junior Carla Tagliente (Cortland, N.Y) ranks third in total points (48) , second in goals (17) and second in assists (18) on the Terps. She is one of the hottest goal scorers in the nation during the last month of the season. Tagliente has more total points in her last nine games (30) than she did during the first 12 games of the season (23).

Ward Enjoys Senior Season
Senior Emily Ward (Ellicott City, Md.) is one of only two seniors on this year's Maryland field hockey team. She has played in 12 games during the 1999 season and 43 during her four-year career. The three-time ACC Honor Roll selection has scored a career-high two goals this season and has tied her career high with one assist. Maryland is 12-0 this season when Ward has earned playing time.
Palchinsky Earns Playing Time
Sophomore Kristy Palchinsky (Leonardtown, Md.) has two multi-goal games this season and scored the game-winning goals against Old Dominion (Oct. 17), Towson (Sept. 15) and Ball State (Sept. 17). She has started 15 of the last 16 games and has earned starting assignments in a career-high 16 games this season.
Messimer Is Among Top Rookies
Freshman Carissa Messimer (Mountaintop, Pa.) is one of the top rookies in the nation. She scored the game-winning goal for the Terps on Oct. 2 against Virginia and has played in 17 of Maryland's 18 games. Messimer scored hat tricks against Towson (Sept. 15) and Georgetown (Sept. 18) in consecutive games during the early part of Maryland's school-record 18-game winning streak.
Senkler Coming of Age
Sophomore Carol Senkler (Hockessin, Del.) has started five of the last seven games and has now started 20 games during her two-year career. She has a career-high two goals and a career-high five total points this season.
Kelly Contributing
Sophomore Megan Kelly (Gaithersburg, Md.) has played in (20-16) and started (9-6) more games this season than she did as a freshman in 1998. As a member of the field hockey team (currently 20-1) and a member of the 1999 national champion Maryland women's lacrosse team (21-0), Kelly has helped the two teams to a sensational 40-1 (.976) record in the past nine months.
Gorewitz Helps Lead Defense
Junior Lindsay Gorewtiz (Rockville, Md.) has started 19 of Maryland's 21 games this season and is a leader on the Terps' defense which is ranked as the eighth-best defense in the nation. The Terps have recorded eight shutouts this season and 24 during her three-year career. Maryland's defense has allowed three or more goals only twice this season.
Kauffman Returns to Lineup
Junior Molly Kauffman (East Lawn, Pa.) returned to the Terps' lineup against Richmond and has started the last three games after missing five consecutive games with a hip-flexor injury. Kauffman is a team tri-captain and leader on defense. Maryland's cohesive and deep defensive unit played well and allowed only four goals in five games during Kauffman's absence.
ACC Players Of The Week
Maryland led the ACC with five player of the week selections during the 199 season. Junior Rachel Hiskins earned the honor twice (Sept. 27 and Oct. 19) while Caroline Walter (Sept. 13) Keli Smith (Oct. 5) and Carla Tagliente (Oct. 12) earned the honor once each.
Terps With Five ACC Selections
Maryland tied a school record and led the ACC with five all-conference selections as voted on by the ACC's five head coaches. ACC Player of the Year Caroline Walter was joined by Rachel Hiskins, Keli Smith, Carla Tagliente and Autumn Welsh. Maryland's five selections to the All-ACC team ties the school record which was first set in 1995.
Terps Beat Virginia In Semifinals
Sophomore Caroline Walter and junior Carla Tagliente scored second-half goals to lead No. 1 Maryland to a 2-0 victory over No. 10 Virginia in the semifinals of the ACC field hockey tournament at Kentner Stadium Friday night. Maryland improved to 19-1 on the season. The Terps have not lost since Sept. 6. Virginia is now 13-7. Walter scored the game-winner with at the 7:24 mark of the second half. It was her career-high 23rd goal of the season. The goal was unassisted. Tagliente then scored an insurance goal with 18:54 remaining in regulation time. Walter was credited with an assist on the play. Sophomore Ashley Hohnstine was not tested and made 0 saves in her first career ACC tournament start.
