COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Junior Caroline Walter (Reilingen, Germany) scored the game-winning goal with 1:43 elapsed in the first overtime period to lift No. 1-ranked Maryland to a 3-2 victory over No. 7-ranked Old Dominion and send the Terps to the NCAA Tournament semifinals for the fifth time in school history. The Terps will face Iowa in Friday's first semifinal game at 12:30 p.m. at Northeastern University in Boston. It is the first time since 1995 that the Terps will play in the NCAA semifinals. Maryland won the national championship in 1993. Walter scored the game-winning goal on an assist by sophomore Autumn Welsh (Macungie, Pa.). Welsh stopped a penalty corner by junior Rachel Hiskins (Victoria, Australia) and passed to Walter. Walter dribbled about five feet and sent a shot into the net past Old Dominion goalkeeper Mary Beth Freeman. The goal was her team-leading and career-high 24th of the season. Old Dominion forced the extra session with two goals in the second half after Maryland took a 2-0 lead with 29:26 remaining in regulation time.

Maryland is playing in the NCAA Tournament for the 12th time in school history. The Terps hold a 15-9 record (.625) and have won two national championships. The Terps have advanced as far as the NCAA semifinals four times and have won two NCAA championships.

Terps Vs. Iowa in the NCAA Tournament
Maryland and Iowa have met three times in the NCAA Tournament with the Terps winning all three games. Twice, in 1987 and 1993, the Terps have defeated Iowa on their way to the national championship. The Terps hold a 6-3-1 (.633) all-time record against Iowa. Maryland and Iowa last met on Sept. 22, 1996 with the Terps taking a 2-1 victory in College Park.

Hiskins Sets School Record

Terps Ranked No. 1
Maryland claimed the No. 1 ranking in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association poll when it was released on Nov. 2. The Terps, who were ranked No. 1 in the Sports Illustrated for Women's poll, passed the former top team, Connecticut, in the rankings on the strength of a 16-game winning streak and a tough schedule. The winning streak has come against nine teams ranked in the top 20, including the Terps' Oct. 23 victory over No. 5 North Carolina and former No. 1 Old Dominion on Oct. 17. The Terps are undefeated in the ACC, a league where all five teams are ranked in the top 11.
Walter On Fire
Sophomore Caroline Walter has scored a career-high 24 goals this season. She scored the game-winning goal against Old Dominion on Nov. 14. Her 24 goals ties Nadine Bennett for the second-highest single-season total in school history. She has scored five goals and four game-winning goals in the last six games.

Walter In Overtime
Sophomore Caroline Walter has scored two game-winning goals in overtime this season. She scored the game-winners against Old Dominion on Nov. 14 and against North Carolina on Oct. 23 during the second overtime period. Walter now has two game-winning overtime goals during her career.
Kauffman Returns
Junior tri-captain Molly Kauffman (East Lawn, Pa.) has started four of the last five games after missing five consecutive games with a hip-flexor injury. Since her return to the defensive lineup, Maryland has allowed only three goals while winning all five games.
Hohnstine Leads Nation
Sophomore Ashley Hohnstine (Oak Hill, Va.) is the nation's leader in goals against average with a 0.63 mark and ranks sixth in save percentage (.843). Hohnstine is the top-ranked goalie in the ACC in goals against average and save percentage. She recorded a career-high 10 saves against Old Dominion in Maryland's 2-0 victory on Oct. 17 and has allowed one goal in her last 282 minutes played. In 353 minutes in ACC competition this season she allowed only two goals.

Sophomore Ashley Hohnstine had a 5-0 record against ACC competition this season. She recorded complete-game shutouts against NCAA Tournament participants Wake Forest (Sept. 25) and Virginia (Nov. 4) and held Virginia scoreless in 48 minutes of play on Oct. 2 in College Park.

Gorewitz Holds On Defense
Junior Lindsay Gorewitz (Rockville, Md.) has started all four of Maryland's 1999 postseason games and a career-high 20 games this season. She has started more games during the 1999 postseason (two ACC Tournament and two NCAA Tournament) than she did during her first two years in College Park combined (three). In the four postseason games, Gorewitz and Maryland's defense has allowed only three goals, turned two shutouts and won two games in overtime.
Welsh On the Offensive
Sophomore Autumn Welsh (Macungie, Pa.) was credited with an assist on Caroline Walter's game-winning goal against Old Dominion on Nov. 14. The assist was her career-high 17th of the season and first of the postseason. In three games against Old Dominion this season, Welsh recorded one goal and three assists for five total points. Maryland recorded a 2-1 record against the Monarchs this season. Her 17 assists is tied for the sixth-highest single season total in school history.
Welsh On The Defensive
Sophomore Autumn Welsh has helped the Terp defense become one of the most cohesive in the nation this season. The Terps have allowed only 25 goals in 23 games for an average of 1.06 per game. She has helped the Terps turn nine shutouts this season.
Smith Soaring
Junior tri-captain Keli Smith (Selinsgrove, Pa.) has recorded a career-high 40 points this season. She has as many points this season as she accumulated during her first two seasons combined. Smith has recorded a career-high 12 goals and a career-high 16 assists this season.

Junior Keli Smith has recorded a career-high 16 assists this season. Smith's 16 total assists this season rank fourth on the team and as the seventh-highest single-season total in school history. Smith recorded six total assists as a freshman and sophomore.
Tagliente Maintains Consistency
Junior All America Carla Tagliente has scored a near career-high 18 goals this season. She scored Maryland's second goal in its 3-2 overtime victory over Old Dominion that vaulted the Terps into the NCAA semifinals. In three seasons as a Terp she averages exactly 18 goals per season. Tagliente totals 54 goals for her career to rank third all-time at Maryland.

Simon Getting Into The Act
Redshirt freshman Kateri Simon (Fallston, Md.) has played in 10 games this season including each of the last three. She earned playing time in the postseason as she was inserted into Maryland's ACC Tournament championship clinching victory over Wake Forest and both of its NCAA Tournament games against Lafayette and Old Dominion.
Terps Win ACC Championship
Junior All-American Carla Tagliente scored the game-winning goal in the second overtime period to lead Maryland to a 2-1 victory over Wake Forest in the championship game of the 1999 Atlantic Coast Conference field hockey tournament at Kentner Stadium in Winston-Salem, N.C. on Nov. 7. Tagliente's unassisted goal with 13:09 remaining in the second overtime period lifted the No. 1-ranked Terps to their second consecutive conference crown. The goal came on a breakaway and deflected off Wake Forest goalie Meghan Nitka as it sailed into the net. Maryland got on the scoreboard early as Keli Smith scored with only 1:33 elapsed in the first half. Sophomore Caroline Walter, the ACC Player of the Year, was credited with an assist on the play. Wake Forest's only goal of the game came with 27:49 remaining in the second half when Amy Marchell scored an unassisted goal. Maryland outshot Wake Forest, 15-9, including a game-high six shots by Tagliente. Sophomore goalie Ashley Hohnstine recorded seven saves while Wake's Nitka was credited with 10 stops.
Tagliente Named Tourn. MVP
Junior All-American Carla Tagliente, who scored the game-winning goal in the Atlantic Coast Conference field hockey championship game on Nov. 7, was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player in a vote by the league's five head coaches. Tagliente scored two goals in two games as the Terps won their second consecutive ACC title. Junior Keli Smith and sophomore Caroline Walter were named to the all-tournament team. The honors marked the first for Tagliente and Smith while Walter has now earned ACC all-tournament honors in two consecutive years. Walter was named as the 1999 ACC Player of the Year while she, Tagliente and Smith all earned All-ACC honors for the 1999 season.
Terps Claim ACC Season Title
Maryland won its third ACC regular-season title as it defeated North Carolina, 2-1 in double overtime, on Oct. 23. The Terps' victory over the Tar Heels gave the team a 4-0 conference mark. It marked the first time since 1993 that the Terps had won the regular season ACC title. Maryland also won the ACC regular season championship in 1991.
Walter Is Player Of The Year
Sophomore forward Caroline Walter, who has helped lead the Maryland field hockey team to the nation's No. 1 ranking and to the 1999 Atlantic Coast Conference tournament championship, was selected as the ACC PLAYER OF THE YEAR in a vote by the league's five head coaches. Walter was also named as a member of the All-ACC team. Walter has scored a career-high 24 goals and added nine assists for a career-high 57 total points this season. Walter is one of only six players in the nation who has scored 20 or more goals this season and has scored at least one goal in 15 of Maryland's 21 games.
Palchinsky Earns Playing Time
Sophomore Kristy Palchinsky (Leonardtown, Md.) has two multi-goal games this season and scored the game-winning goals against Old Dominion (Oct. 17), Towson (Sept. 15) and Ball State (Sept. 17). She has started 16 of the last 18 games and has earned starting assignments in a career-high 18 games this season.
Senkler Coming of Age
Sophomore Carol Senkler (Hockessin, Del.) has started six of the last nine games and has now started 21 games during her two-year career. She has a career-high two goals and a career-high five total points this season.
Kelly Contributing
Sophomore Megan Kelly (Gaithersburg, Md.) has played in (22-16) and started (9-6) more games this season than she did as a freshman in 1998. As a member of the field hockey team (currently 22-1) and a member of the 1999 national champion Maryland women's lacrosse team (21-0), Kelly has helped the two teams to a sensational 43-1 (.977) record in the past nine months.

Maryland led the ACC with five player of the week selections during the 199 season. Junior Rachel Hiskins earned the honor twice (Sept. 27 and Oct. 19) while Caroline Walter (Sept. 13) Keli Smith (Oct. 5) and Carla Tagliente (Oct. 12) earned the honor once each.

Maryland tied a school record and led the ACC with five all-conference selections as voted on by the ACC's five head coaches.
