BOSTON, Mass. - Junior Rachel Hiskins (Victoria, Australia) scored at 13:29
of the second overtime to lead the No. 1-ranked University of Maryland field hockey
team to a 2-1 victory over the University of Iowa in the national semifinals on Friday.
Sophomore Caroline Walter (Reilingen, Germany) assisted on the goal, which
came on a penalty corner and propelled the Terps to the National Championship game.
They will face the University of Michigan at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday. The Wolverines
defeated Connecticut 4-3 in the other semifinal contest.
Maryland's first goal came by way of freshman Carissa Messimer
(Mountaintop, Pa.) at 7:23 of the first half and was assisted by junior Keli Smith
(Selinsgrove, Pa.).
Iowa scored on a goal by Lesley Irvine to even the contest and force the sudden
death overtime periods. The Terps out-shot Iowa 15-3 and held a 13-4 advantage in
penalty corners. The win marked the third consecutive win for Maryland in double-
overtime.
