
Meharg Named Regional Field Hockey Coach Of The Year

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Missy Meharg, who led the University of Maryland field hockey team to the 1999 national championship, has been named the Dita/NFHCA Mid Atlantic region Coach of the Year. Meharg is one of five regional coaches who are finalists for the National Coach of the Year award which will be announced on Jan. 8, 2000.
Meharg led the Terps to a 24-1 overall record and the third field hockey national championship in the program's illustrious history. Her squad set school records for most wins in a season (24), fewest losses in a season (one), highest winning percentage (.960) and longest winning streak (22).
Meharg became one of only four coaches in NCAA field hockey to win multiple NCAA championships. Meharg has led the Terps to the 1993 and 1999 national titles. She has a career record of 188-68-9 for a .726 winning percentage.
The Terps began and ended the season as the nation's No. 1 ranked team. The team was ranked No. 1 in the preseason poll by Sports Illustrated for Women and spent the final five weeks of the regular season ranked No. 1 by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association.
All 11 starters from the Terps' 1999 national championship team return for the 2000 season that begins in August.
