COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Eight members of Maryland's Division I national championship field hockey team have been named to the 1999 National Field Hockey Coaches Association Academic team. Maryland is one of only two teams in the nation to have eight team members named to the squad.
Maryland won the national championship on Nov. 21 as it defeated Michigan, 2-1. The Terps finished with a 24-1 record and were ranked No. 1 in the nation for the final six weeks of the season. The team established records for wins in a season (24), fewest losses (one), longest winning streak (22) and goals scored (127). Maryland won its first two games of the season and closed the season with 22 consecutive wins in winning the third national championship in the history of the program. Along the way, the Terps also won the regular season and tournament championships of the Atlantic Coast Conference with a perfect 6-0 record.
Senior Emily Ward (Ellicott City, Md.) led the parade of Terps on the NFHCA Academic squad. The engineering major was joined by Ashley Hohnstine (Oak Hill, Va./kinesiology and nutritional sciences), Angie Klingerman (Bloomsburg, Pa./business), Carol Senkler (Hockessin, Del/biological sciences), Kateri Simon (Fallston, Md./biological sciences), Carla Tagliente (Cortland, N.Y./mechanical engineering), Caroline Walter (Reilingen, Germany/business) and Autumn Welsh (Allentown, Pa./letters and sciences).
Maryland was tied with Syracuse University with eight selections to the team.
"I am thrilled that we had eight players selected to the National Academic squad," head coach Missy Meharg said. "It is a tribute to all of the players in our program. It also says a great deal about the University of Maryland and the entire department of intercollegiate athletics. We have been given the resources to be wonderfully successful on the field and in the classroom."
