Terps Travel to George Mason Before Hosting ACC Rival Virginia

Maryland (9-11, 3-7) travels across the Potomac but out of ACC play on Tuesday, traveling to George Mason (3-18) in Fairfax, Va., for a 7:30 matchup with the Patriots. The Terps return home on Friday, hosting Virginia (19-4, 7-3) in an ACC matchup. Tuesday's meeting with the Patriots marks the 24th time the two teams have met.

Maryland holds an 18-5 advantage with the last Terp win, a 3-0 blanking, coming on Sept. 20, 1997. George Mason last defeated Maryland on Oct. 9, 1996 by a score of 3-2. Friday's meeting with Virginia is the second meeting of the season for these two schools, and the 30th overall. Maryland leads the series, 24-5, with Virginia handing the Terps a 3-0 loss earlier this season.

TERPS END FOUR-GAME SLIDE WITH 3-1 WIN AGAINST NC STATE
Maryland ended its longest losing streak of the season, and its longest since 1993, defeating NC State in four games, 15-11, 14-16, 16-14, 15-9, last Saturday night. The Terps were led by the trio of Beth Murphy (Golden, Colo.), Jaime Summers (Conneaut Lake, Pa.) and Libby Alberts (Eden Prairie, Minn.). Murphy posted a match-high 23 kills and hit .273, and also added 16 digs. Summers led all players in digs with 23 and had seven kills. Freshman setter Alberts led the Terps with 40 assists along with eight kills, while hitting .538.

TERPS FALL IN THREE TO TAR HEELS
Maryland junior outside hitter Beth Murphy (Golden, Colo.) led the Maryland offense with a team-high 13 kills and a .219 hitting percentage in the Terps' three-game loss against North Carolina. Senior middle hitter Jaime Summers (Conneaut Lake, Pa.) hit a team-high .563 and added 11 digs. Sophomore setter Katarina Bridova (Bratislava, Slovakia) saw extensive playing time, playing in all three games and totaling 23 assists and seven digs. Maryland hit .115 as a team, recording 43 kills, and totaled 66 digs.

SUMMERS BACK ON TRACK
Maryland senior middle hitter Jaime Summers (Conneaut Lake, Pa.) returned to seasons past against NC State and North Carolina on Oct. 7 and Oct. 10, respectively, totaling a season-high 23 kills against NC State, and hitting a season-high .421 against North Carolina. She recorded double-figure kills and digs against NC State for only the sixth time this season. Summers erased her old season-high .421 this past weekend, hitting .563 against North Carolina on Friday after totaling nine kills on 16 swings with no errors. She also totaled 11 digs to lead the Terps on defense. Against NC State on Saturday, she totaled 23 digs. Summers is hitting .268, and is second on the team in digs with 217.

BRIDOVA RETURNS FROM INJURY TO SEE PLAYING TIME AGAINST TAR HEELS
Maryland sophomore setter Katarina Bridova (Bratislava, Slovakia) returned from an earlier ankle injury to see significant playing time against North Carolina last Friday night. She totaled 23 assists and seven digs in the three games.

Maryland is hitting .183 as a team, and .172 in Atlantic Coast Conference play ... freshman Katie Cramer (Loveland, Colo.) leads all hitters with a .302 hitting percentage and has a team-high 80 blocks ... senior middle hitter Jaime Summers is hitting .268 ... junior outside hitter Beth Murphy is averaging a team-high 3.25 kills per game ... freshman setter Libby Alberts (Eden Prairie, Minn.) is averaging 9.70 assists per game ... senior outside hitter Kim Adolphs (Runcorn, Australia) leads all Terps on defense with a 3.60 digs per game average ... the Terps are averaging 2.57 blocks per game, 16.81 digs per game and 14.04 kills per game.

BLOCKIN' TERPS
Maryland is fifth in the ACC in blocks per game with a 2.61 per game average (as of Oct. 20). Freshman Katie Cramer ranks eighth in blocks per game with a 1.12 per game average.

MICHIGAN ENDS TERP STREAK
Maryland's 33-match regular-season winning streak was snapped after Michigan defeated the Terps, 3-1, at the Georgetown Invitational on Sept. 4. It was the Terps' first regular-season loss since their loss to Florida on Oct. 18, 1996. The Wolverines won game one, 15-8, but the Terps came back in game two, grabbing a 15-13 win. The experienced Wolverine attack proved to be too much, however, for the young Terp squad, as they took the final two games, 15-8, 15-5, respectively.

QUICK SET
Freshman Libby Alberts has earned the starting nod for the Terps at the setter position. In her first year in a Maryland uniform, Alberts has totaled 737 assists in 76 games for a 9.70 per game average.

KRUGER STILL LEADS ACC ACTIVE COACHES
Maryland head coach Janice Kruger (Nebraska, '77) leads all ACC active coaches in career victories. Kruger has totaled 78 career ACC wins and 38 career losses in her 10 years in the league, and has a .672 winning percentage.
