Two Former Terps Selected to '99 U.S. National Team

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Former Terps Kate Kauffman (West Lawn, Pa.) and Christine DeBow (West Chester, Pa.) have been selected to the 1999 U.S. National Field Hockey Team following a week-long tryout conducted at Rutgers University by the United States Field Hockey Association (USFHA). Kauffman and DeBow are among 10 current or former Maryland field hockey players to have been selected to one of the U.S. national teams.
Kauffman earned her fourth consecutive selection to the U.S. National Team while DeBow made the squad for the third straight year. At Maryland, Kauffman was a two-time first-team All-America selection (1994 and 1996) and DeBow was a three-time first-team All-American (1995-97). Kauffman played on the 1996 U.S. Olympic Team, and both she and DeBow were members of last year's U.S. World Cup Team.
Former Terp Carolyn Schwarz (Gaithersburg, Md.) and current sophomore Carla Tagliente (Cortland, N.Y.) to the U.S. National reserve team. While at Maryland, Schwarz was a Mid Atlantic Regional All-American (1997). Tagliente, meanwhile, was named a third-team All-American in 1997 and was a first-team All-American this past season.
Sophomores Molly Kauffman (West Lawn, Pa.) and Keli Smith (Selinsgrove, Pa.) and freshman Autumn Welsh (Macungie, Pa.) all earned spots on the U.S. Under-20 team. Kauffman and Welsh were both Mid Atlantic Region All-America selection this past season. Smith was a second team All-America selection this season.
Sophomore Lindsay Gorewitz (Rockville, Md.) and freshman Dina Rizzo (Walpole, Mass.) were named to the U.S. Under-20 reserve team.
The U.S. National Team will take part in the Pan American Games July 24-Aug. 8 in Winnipeg, Canada. The Pan American Games serve as a continental qualifier for the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia, with the champion advancing to the 10-team Olympic Tournament.
The U.S. Under-20 team will compete in a USA four-nation tournament June 21-27 as well as a series of games in Winnipeg, Canada July 20-28.
