Georgia Tech Volleyball Stuffs Maryland

ATLANTA - Behind the blocking of Kyleen Bell who had eight block assists and Carla Gartner, who added six block assists, the Georgia Tech (21-10, 9-5) volleyball team defeated Maryland (10-14, 3-10) in four games, 15-4, 15-10, 2-15, 15-4. The defense of the Jackets proved to be too tough as the Terrapins were held to a .091 hitting percentage on the night.
In game one, hitting errors by the Terrapins allowed the Jackets to jump out to an early 11-1 lead as Bell had four block assists and Gartner tallied two block assists. Teryl Townsend also had three kills in the game as Tech would win game one 15-4.
The Jackets contined their strong play in game two as they built an early 10-1 lead with two aces from Aimee Boulet, and four kills from Townsend. However, the Terrapins quickly got back into the game with five kills from Beth Murphy and got close with a 9-11 defecit. But,, the blocking of the Jackets played a role again as Gartner and Bell would get two block assists for Tech and lead them to a 15-10 victory.
Game three proved to be all Maryland as the Terrapins came out strong and posted a 9-1 lead with three kills from Jaime Summers and strong serving from Katie Jentes. Georgia Tech could never get themselves out of their hole and their unforced errors and strong defense from the Terrapins helped Maryland cruise to a 15-2 win.
However, Tech quickly bounced back in game four and built a 14-0 lead with kills from Gartner and strong blocking from Townsend and Bell. After Maryland scored five points, the Jackets sided out and finished the game, winning 15-5.
