Volleyball Drops 3-1 Decision to Michigan at Georgetown Invitational

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The University of Maryland volleyball team suffered its first regular-season loss since its loss to Florida on October 18, 1996, dropping a 3-1 decision to Michigan in its first match at the Georgetown Invitational on Friday afternoon. The Wolverines won game one, 15-8 but the Terps came back in game two, grabbing a 15-13 win. The experienced Wolverines proved to be too much, however, for the young Terp squad, as they took the final two games, 15-8 and 15-5, respectively.
The Terps lost the first game, 15-8, after hitting a dismal .023. They bounced back in the second game, coming behind from a 7-0 deficit, to win, 15-13. In game two, the Terps hit a sizzling .512 on 24 kills and 43 attempts with only two errors.
Leading the Terrapins on offense was junior outside hitter Beth Murphy who recorded 16 kills and hit .344. Senior outside hitter Kim Adolphs posted a team-high 19 kills (.273) and led the Terps on defense with 17 digs. Freshman setter Libby Alberts totaled 32 assists.
The Wolverines had three hitters post above-.400 hitting percentages, including a blistering .524 by senior outside hitter Anne Poglits. Seniors Jeanine Szscesniak and Karen Chase each hit .464 and .444, respectively. Sophomore setter Alija Pittenger recorded 30 assists.
The Terps continue play at the Georgetown Invitational on Saturday, meeting Temple at noon and Georgetown at 6 p.m.
Maryland is now 1-1 overall while Michigan is 1-0.
