MURPHY AND HANNAS LEAD TERPS PAST DUKE
Maryland junior outside hitters Beth Murphy and Kate Hannas led the Terps to a 3-1 defeat against Duke last Thursday evening in the first round of the ACC Tournament. Murphy pounded down a team-high 17 kills while Hannas hit a team-high .500 after registering 15 kills, two errors and 26 total swings. MARYLAND RIDES LONGEST WIN STREAK SINCE BEGINNING OF SEASON
Maryland collected its third straight win last Thursday night after defeating the eighth-seeded Duke Blue Devils, 3-1, in the first round of the ACC Tournament. The Terps entered Friday's match against Virginia riding a three-match win streak which dated back to their wins against Florida State on Nov. 13 and Duke on Nov. 14. The Terps' longest win streak of the season is four, dating back to when they defeated Georgetown, UMBC, San Diego State and Temple, respectively.
TERPS ADVANCE TO QUARTERFINALS FOR FOURTH STRAIGHT YEAR
Maryland advanced to the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament for the fourth consecutive season last Thursday night after its four-game win against Duke. Maryland earned a bye into the quarterfinals in 1996 and 1997 after finishing as regular-season champions. In 1995, Maryland defeated Duke (3-0) in the first round, and then defeated Florida State (3-0) to advance to the championship. Georgia Tech handed the Terps a 3-0 loss in the finals.
MURPHY FINISHES RANKED IN TOP 10 IN SEVERAL CATEGORIES
Maryland junior outside hitter Beth Murphy registered a team-high 381 kills which ranks her tied for 10th on Maryland's all-time single-season kills chart. Murphy is tied with former Terrapin Elizabeth Efron for 10th place. Her 1,076 attempts places her fourth on the single-season charts.
CRAMER THE BLOCKING MACHINE
Maryland freshman Katie Cramer (Loveland, Colo.) finished her freshman campaign with 108 total blocks. Her 29 block solos rank her tied for ninth on the all-time single-season chart.
ALBERTS HITS 1,000 ASSIST MARK
Freshman Libby Alberts totaled 1,121 assists in her first year in a Maryland uniform. The Minnesota native played in 111 games and averaged 10.10 assists per game. Her 1,121 assists ranks her seventh on the single-season chart.
KRUGER STILL LEADS ACC ACTIVE COACHES
Maryland head coach Janice Kruger (Nebraska, '77) leads all ACC active coaches in career victories. Kruger has totaled 80 career ACC wins and 43 career losses in her 10 years in the league, and has a .656 winning percentage.
KRUGER NEARING 600 WIN PLATAEU
Maryland head coach Janice Kruger is eight wins shy of career-win No. 600. Kruger owns a 592-229-6 career record in 20 years of coaching. Kruger would become the 14th coach all-time to record 600 wins. Cal State Sacramento head coach Debbie Colberg recently collected career-win No. 600 to become the 13th all-time winningest coach. Kruger follows her as the nation's 14th all-time winningest coach.
KRUGER'S COURT
Terrapin head coach Janice Kruger completed her 11th season at Maryland. Kruger has guided the Terps to back-to-back undefeated regular-season ACC records, and to a perfect 25-0 regular-season record last year. She owns a 220-127 record at Maryland, and has a 592-229-6 career record in her 20 years.
YOUNG GUNS
Of Maryland's six starters this season, only two, Jaime Summers and Kim Adolphs, had played or started prior to this year. Junior Beth Murphy transferred from Duquesne; junior Kate Hannas and sophomore Maren Stuart played sparingly last season; and freshman Libby Alberts made her collegiate debut.
TERPS FINALLY GET OVER THE HUMP
Maryland hit .205 against Duke on Nov. 14 marking the first time since Oct. 13 that the Terps had registered a team attack percentage over .200. Maryland hit .210 against Virginia on Oct. 13.
MARYLAND GETS OVER THE HUMP PART II
In its four-game win against Duke last Thursday night, Maryland again hit above .200, registering a .227 mark. The Terps totaled 72 kills, 31 errors and 181 attempts.
OVER THE HUMP PART III
Maryland hit .229 against Virginia last Friday night in the second round of the ACC Tournament to mark the third consecutive match that it has hit over .200. The Terps finished the year hitting .182.
A FIRST SINCE 1988
Maryland's below-.500 record marked the first time since 1988 that a Terp team has posted a below-.500 mark. It also marked only the second time Maryland head coach Janice Kruger has coached a team that has finished below .500 in her 20 years of coaching. The 1988 Maryland team, which was Kruger's first year at the helm of the Terp program, finished with an 11-22 record. Kruger has posted three consecutive 20-win seasons the last three years, including a school-record 27-win last season.
13 WINS MARK LOWEST SINCE 1988
Maryland's 13 wins this season mark its fewest-win season since 1988 when the Terps posted a 11-22 record.
TERPS RETURN FOUR STARTERS IN 1999
Four starters return in 1999 for the young Terrapin squad. Back for their fourth and final year are juniors Kate Hannas and Beth Murphy, while freshmen Libby Alberts and Katie Cramer return for their second year. Also returning are sophomores Katarina Bridova, Katie Jentes and Maren Stuart, and freshmen Angie Banys, Judy Shen and Autumn Wilson, all of whom saw siginificant playing time this season.
TERPS' STREAK SNAPPED
Maryland's 34-match ACC regular-season winning streak came to a halt on Sept. 25, after the Terps dropped a 3-0 decision to the Duke Blue Devils. The streak dated back to Oct. 21, 1995, when the Terps suffered a 3-1 loss to Clemson. The last time a Maryland team had been swept in the ACC regular season was Oct. 20, 1995, when Georgia Tech defeated the Terps, 3-0. Maryland ran through the ACC standings in 1996 and 1997, posting an undefeated mark of 16-0 in both seasons.
MICHIGAN ENDS TERP STREAK
Maryland's 33-match regular-season winning streak was snapped after Michigan defeated the Terps, 3-1, at the Georgetown Invitational on Sept. 4. It was the Terps' first regular-season loss since their loss to Florida on Oct. 18, 1996. The Wolverines won game one, 15-8, but the Terps came back in game two, grabbing a 15-13 win. The experienced Wolverine attack proved to be too much, however, for the young Terp squad, as they took the final two games, 15-8, 15-5, respectively.
