COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland sophomore attack Quinn Carney (Flemington, N.J.) took a long feed from junior midfielder Kristin Sommar (North Wales, Pa.) at the 68:31 mark in sudden-death overtime to lift the top-ranked Terps to an 8-7 win against sixth-ranked Princeton Wednesday evening at Ludwig Field. The play ensued after Maryland goalkeeper Alex Kahoe (Villanova, Pa.) intercepted a Tice Burke pass, which was intended for Julie Shaner. Kahoe quickly cleared the ball out to Sommar who, in turn, threw the long ball to Carney. The Terps improve to 17-0 overall, and extend their winning streak to 24 straight games. The Tigers fall to 11-4.
The game was tied at half after each team exchanged goals. The Tigers took the lead at the 25:50 mark off a goal from Julie Shaner, assisted by Cristi Samaras. The Terps then tied the game at the 27:32 mark following a Courtney Martinez (Towson, Md.) pass to Sommar.
The Terps eventually would take a two-goal lead at the 46:44 mark after Jen Adams converted off of a free position. Following a Princeton timeout, Tiger senior Cristi Samaras would knot back-to-back goals to tie the contest once again and force overtime. The two teams would play a scoreless six-minute overtime period to force sudden death.
Princeton was led by Samaras who netted four goals. Burke added two goals and two assists. Maryland's Jen Adams (Brighton, Australia) and Sommar led the way on offense for the Terps, each scoring two goals and adding an assist. Maryland concludes its 1999 regular-season schedule on Saturday, May 1, when it hosts Loyola at 1 p.m.
