CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The University of Maryland wrestling season ended in disappointment on Friday, March 20 as seniors Shane Mack and Jeff Whalen fell short of All-America status at the NCAA Championships at Cleveland State University.
Whalen, who finished third at 150 pounds at the ACC Championships on March 7, won two matches, but was knocked out by David Maldonado of Iowa State, 5-1. Whalen's wins came over Ian Kaplan of Davidson, 8-2, and ACC rival Jim Harshaw of Virginia, 7-3.
After taking third place at the ACCs for the fourth consecutive year, Mack won his first round match over Jeromy McVige of Buffalo, 3-2, but lost his final two matches by falls to Jason Davids of Minnesota and Trent McDowell of Fresno State.
